WWE Bragging Rights: What Wade Barrett's DQ Win Over Randy Orton Means

Alfred KonuwaOct 24, 2010

WWE Bragging Rights showcased a serviceable pay-per-view event that was capped off with a Wade Barrett disqualification win over Randy Orton in the main event for the WWE Championship.

The DQ win for Barrett was a result of John Cena continuing to do right by his job, by carrying out Wade Barrett's instructions to the letter, while still trying to appease the WWE Universe as a babyface as he hit Barrett with an Attitude Adjustment.

While many may consider Barrett's DQ win a letdown, because conventional pay-per-view main events entail more decisive finishes, the result has extended the shelf life of the current CeNexus angle.

Before the WWE Championship match, Wade Barrett told John Cena that, if he did not win his match against Randy Orton, Cena would be fired.

It was at the conclusion of this match that the WWE decided to get cute and have John Cena perform the AA on Barrett, thus giving Barrett the DQ win while retaining Cena's status as a very ambiguous (and fan-friendly) member of the Nexus.

Following the match, Randy Orton RKOed Cena for his troubles, adding more fuel to the fiercely burning fire that is John Cena's imminent heel turn.

It is almost a foregone conclusion that the WWE Championship feud between Barrett and Orton will continue, however the latest wrinkle added to this feud may result in John Cena being more of an asset to Wade Barrett.

John Cena's ambiguity as a Nexus member may slowly begin to dwindle for a host of reasons.  For one, Wade Barrett has learned his lesson about being specific when giving John Cena's instructions.

The inevitable rematch between Orton and Barrett will likely come with the Wade Barrett self-imposed stipulation that John Cena specifically help him win the WWE Championship

Such a stip could be facilitated if John Cena is thrown into the mix in a possible triple threat encounter.

But John Cena's character may not need to be instructed to assist Wade Barrett in the demise of Randy Orton.

As Cena continues to find himself between a rock and a hard place, he keeps trying to do the right thing in the context of A. Keeping his job and B. Shrewdly thwarting the Nexus' plans.

However tonight's latest effort was met with an RKO.  Such ungratefulness by Randy Orton (and the WWE Universe) may be all Cena needs to slowly transform into embittered heel who is sick of risking his job to do the right thing only to get booed and attacked for his troubles.

This is a simple, effective, believable storyline that would translate into box office success down the road if handled carefully.

Tonight's DQ finish in a pay-per-view event was a very unpopular and underwhelming finish that may have upset the entire purist hierarchy of wrestling pundits (many of whom think wrestling is real).

But the finish may have been the right move for the long term welfare of an intriguing CeNexus angle.
