Champions League: Jose Mourinho's Side Cruise To a 2-0 Win Over AC Milan.
It was a comfortable night for Real Madrid in a game that lived up to its billing. Los Blancos put themselves top of Group G as they eased their way to a 2-0 victory against AC Milan and maintained their record of not conceding in this year’s Champions League.
Ronaldo took the limelight as he grabbed a goal, assisted in Madrid’s second and tormented the Milan defence all night. However, it was the performance of Xabi Alonso that meant the Spanish side could control the game.
His crisp passing together with his tough tackling allowed Madrid to build a solid platform from which to both attack and repel Milan. Meanwhile, Massimiliano Allegri may have wished his AC Milan side had saved some of the goals scored in their 3-1 win over Chievo Verona last weekend as they missed key chances both to the brilliance of Iker Casillas and defensive organistaion.

It was though a similar story for the home team despite their win as they failed to punish an ageing Milan team further.
Mourinho, who is gunning to be the first manager to win the Champions League with three different clubs, kept the same team that started against Malaga and, despite Sergio Ramos’ absence; there is now the feeling that the Portuguese coach has settled his selection issues for the meantime, and this may be owing to the bright start made by his team as their passes connected well putting Milan, whose defence had been reshuffled due to injuries, under immediate pressure.
Madrid’s dominance soon paid off in the 13th minute when Pato’s clumsy foul on Xabi Alonso gave Cristaino Ronaldo the opportunity to set Los Blancos up for the evening. The former Manchester United man, whose free-kicks create more of a penalty situation, struck the ball powerfully into the bottom right-hand corner of the net thanks to the Italian’s porous wall which left debutant Marco Amelia no chance.
With the Rossoneri toiling, Madrid sensed another and it only took 65 seconds for them to double their lead. Ronaldo turned provider as his pull back, after beating both Gennaro Gattuso and Gianluca Zambrotta presented Mesut Ozil with the opportunity to make it two.
The German though looked like he’d mishit his strike but it cruelly deflected off of Milan defender Daniele Bonera to loop over the already committed Amelia.
The Italian outfit responded far more positively after Ozil’s goal. It had its first real effort thanks to Andrea Pirlo in the 29th minute as his arching free-kick forced a surprised Iker Casillias into a good save.
Milan’s next chance fell to Clarence Seedorf, his volleyed effort was blazed well over the Spanish number one’s goal after the Dutchman found some rare space on the right side. But their influence was short-lived as the nine times Champions League winners began to regain their early dominance as Ronaldo and Ozil drew two fantastic saves from the Italian.
The second half proved to be a much quieter affair as AC Milan showed no signs of a way back into the game. Casillas remained untroubled despite the introduction of Madrid old boy Robinho whose volleyed shot in the 83rd minute was well kept out by the World Cup winner, but it was his only notable save in the second half—how Amelia would have loved this.
Madrid continued to pepper his goal as Gonzalo Higuain, who had one of his quieter evenings, headed tamely into the former Livorno man’s hands after a beautifully floated ball into the box by Angel Di Maria.
The former Benfica man then had his chance as Higuain returned the favour but like his fellow countrymen he fluffed his lines to the annoyance of his manager. Even Ronaldo couldn’t find the third as he uncharacteristically dragged his effort wide after good work by Marcelo, but the Spanish team’s control on the game meant that those missed opportunities weren’t punished.
Mourinho’s men must now turn their attentions back to the league where the fans expect just as convincing performance against a stuttering Racing Santander to maintain both their excellent form and keep onto top spot.
AC Milan, meanwhile will have to bounce back from this disappointing defeat as a result away at in-form Napoli would erase the setback suffered at the Santiago Bernabeu.
