Georgia Football: How the Bulldogs Can Still Win the SEC This Season
Against all odds, the Georgia Bulldogs are still right in the mix to win the SEC in 2010.
Had I told you that two weeks ago, you probably would have responded by telling me that I was insane. In fact, some of you may still think that.
But somehow, someway, Georgia can still win their conference.
To do so, the Bulldogs will have to win all of their remaining conference games. It seems far-fetched, but upon further examination it could definitely be done.
The first test will come next Saturday against Kentucky in an away game at Lexington. Kentucky is without a doubt a good team. Mike Hartline, Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke are all very good football players, but remember that the Wildcats are just 4-3 so far this season.
The Bulldogs are riding a boatload of momentum into Lexington after dominant performances against Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Those teams may not have been the toughest competition in the SEC, but they are SEC teams, nonetheless.
So if the Dawgs get a road win against Kentucky, a result that could definitely happen, they would face Florida during Halloween weekend in Jacksonville, Florida.
What was formerly known as the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is always a hard-fought game, and anyone can win the contest any given year.
The Gators are currently on a three-game losing streak, with their most recent defeat coming at the hands of Mississippi State. As Urban Meyer said after the game, Florida is "not very good right now."
Football fans around the country are quickly coming to the realization that Florida is just not the same team as last year. A loss to the Bulldogs is quite possible.
The final SEC test would be the toughest. Georgia has the pleasure of traveling to Auburn and facing the currently undefeated Tigers team, led by Cameron Newton.
A lot can change between now and then, but even if it doesn't, Auburn definitely has weaknesses. The offense is essentially a one-man show. Maybe a two-man show if you include Darvin Adams, a wide receiver for the Tigers.
Also, the defense is pretty much non-existent. Arkansas proved that last Saturday when the two teams combined for 108 points, the most ever in an SEC clash decided in regulation. Georgia's offense has been clicking and could easily exploit the sieve known as Auburn's defense.
Now, even if those three games all end in Georgia victories, it wouldn't be enough. The Dawgs still need some outside help.
South Carolina, a team that still controls its own destiny, would still need to lose to both Florida and Arkansas. In my opinion, a team led by Stephen Garcia could lose on any given Saturday because he's prone to making dumb mistakes.
Marcus Lattimore has been incredible for the Gamecocks during his freshman season, but he's currently injured. Without his services, South Carolina is a much worse team.
It would take a lot for Georgia to win the SEC, but it's still absolutely possible.
