NCAA Football Undefeated Analysis: The Birth Of Lesrechaun

Jeff PencekOct 10, 2010

In college football, where one loss usually damages national title hopes (unless you are in the SEC, Big 12, USC, or Ohio State), it is better to be lucky than good.

Being good like LSU helps, but having the coach be Les Miles (or as I now call him Lesrechaun) adds a whole different level of horseshoes and charms.

The Tigers have pulled out the green clovers and pink hearts to amass an impressive undefeated record, including wins at Florida and over two solid non-conference opponents in North Carolina and West Virginia; none of that would have been possible without the Lesrechaun—a coaching force so demonic and confusing that sometimes even his players don't know where the gold is at, which is one of LSU's colors.

What has this mysterious coaching creature concocted so far this year?

1. Right before a big Saturday night game in Atlanta, he stirs up a potion to have 13 North Carolina players suspended.

Within the grasp of blowing a 20 point lead, he makes Zack Pianalto's hands shrink as he is unable to hold on for the winning touchdown.

2. Before the West Virginia game, he pulled out the defensive magnet spell, where all of his defenders would magically be attracted to the padding of the opposing offensive players.

Unfortunately, LSU's offense was practicing while the spell was cast and West Virginia defenders has the same magical powers. In a game where offense was more like the f-word, LSU won.

3. Lesrechaun started to become cocky with his powers and the end of the Tennessee game was the perfect example. While fans and players were in shock and panic, Les was on the sidelines acting all cool, knowing his next spell was ready to be snapped into play.

The Lesrechaun learned how to multiply players. To the untrained eye, it may have looked like Tennessee was dumb enough to run players on while LSU was losing their minds. In reality, two additional players were created out of thick air.

The replay showed 13 and the additional shot gave them the win and their fans additional medical expenses.

4. Most people would have wondered why Les wasted 20 seconds before getting to the fake field goal against Florida—he needed some time to whip up his next trick.

A normal standard college football rarely would go directly in a parallel line being thrown over a kneeling guy's head and then bounce up perfectly to a running player.

However, if the Lesrechaun magically changed the football into a rubber football with a laser level, both of those issues would easily be fixed. His slight of hand and powers are so quick that no human or alligator would ever notice. He's the man.

College football fans are having a field day proclaiming that Les sold his soul to the devil and that LSU is just lucky.

They are an undefeated team in one of the two conferences that get BCS title bids (minus USC and Ohio State), and they have three very good wins on their record.

In LSU's case, it's better to be lucky than TCU.

Undefeated Analysis Week 6

1. Ohio State - Best Win: 36-24 vs Miami

Good news for Ohio State happened in Happy Valley, where Illinois looked really good and Ohio State's close game looks like a better win; then again, their marquee win against Miami was washed away by a Florida State blowout.

They are No. 1 because they're Ohio State, and at least a win at Wisconsin would justify the ranking.

2. Michigan State - Best Win: 34-17 at Michigan

The Michigan win along with a win versus Wisconsin make Michigan State look like a very legitimate BCS bid contender; the last two wins make up for a horrid non-conference schedule.

One analysis I heard is that Michigan State may be penalized for not playing Ohio State. Somehow, Ohio State wouldn't be penalized. Why question the sacred cow?

Hopefully the addition of Nebraska and an eventual title game will reduce these constant two best teams don't meet scenarios.

3. LSU - Best Win: 33-29 at Florida

The analysis is above, and three is a magic number.

4. Auburn - Best Win: 35-27 vs South Carolina

Auburn's schedule really gives them a strong chance to go undefeated with LSU and Arkansas at home, and only two road games remaining.

Four road games all season and in the SEC—it's the perfect recipe for the BCS title game.

Auburn and LSU both play in the SEC West, only one can possibly go undefeated.

5. Oregon - Best Win: 52-31 vs Stanford

I think Oregon gets so much buzz for No. 2 because they are flashy and score a lot of points.

The Stanford win is definitely strong, but their best non-conference win is at Tennessee.

Oregon will deserve a National Title bid if they can win at USC, win at Cal, and win at Oregon State.

Oregon and Ohio State are No. 1 and No. 2 at this point of the year because somebody has to be.

6. Nevada - Best Win: 52-31 vs California

Before the season, I'm not sure anybody would have thought that a WAC team besides Boise State would have a path to a BCS game, but Nevada definitely does.

Win until Boise State, and then hope an undefeated Broncos team goes into Reno and creates the biggest WAC game in conference history, forever, because BYU killed the conference.

Nevada and Boise State can have a pre-Mountain West party.

7. Boise State - Best Win: 33-30 vs Virginia Tech

Boise State is in a weird position, as they are fans of other teams; Oregon State winning at Arizona must have set off a party in Boise and Fort Worth.

Virginia Tech playing a lot better is a big boost also; the Virginia Tech loss to James Madison was the best recent example of a sports hangover.

Hypothetical scenario—if Virginia Tech wins the ACC and Oregon State wins the Pac-10, how will the BCS look when an undefeated Boise State is overlooked for Ohio State and Oklahoma.

8. TCU - Best Win: 30-21 vs Oregon State

TCU has two big games still on the schedule, at home vs Air Force and at Utah.

Air Force gave Oklahoma all they could handle and an undefeated Utah-TCU matchup could claim a BCS bid.

The fact that the game is at Utah makes a potential perfect game a bit more respectable.

Maybe they can make the title game if they shut out everyone for the rest of the year.

9. Utah - Best Win: Um, uh, maybe the Pittsburgh game

One thing I can say for sure is that an undefeated Utah team is not making the title game—not with Notre Dame stinking it up this year.

Utah needs a Notre Dame run of wins, and a score in the 50's against either Air Force or TCU to move up much further in the rankings.

10. Oklahoma - Best Win: 47-17 vs Florida State

Oklahoma should definitely get some credit for a non-conference schedule with no layups, and having to go to Oklahoma State and Missouri.

If they get to the title game against an undefeated Nebraska and win, they have a strong case to make the title game.

I'm just not sure that the world is ready for another BCS Title Game featuring Oklahoma.

11. Oklahoma State - Best Win: 38-35 vs Texas A&M

If it's Week 6 and you are the second highest scoring team in college football and are ranked 20th, that's usually not a good sign.

The Texas A&M win isn't good, I had to pick one.

Oklahoma State gets a huge break with Nebraska and Oklahoma at home, and will shoot up the rankings with a Nebraska win; nobody is buying them as a potential BCS though.

You have to love a majority of the Big 12 non-conference scheduling.

12. Missouri - Best Win: 23-13 vs Illinois

The only thing worse than being undefeated and 20th is being undefeated and ranked 21st.

Two loss Florida and Oregon State are on Missouri's heels.

The only buzz I've heard about the Tigers this college football season is about fifth down, 20 years ago.

I think all of us can agree that Colorado was one of the worst National Champions ever.

13. Nebraska - Best Win: 56-21 at Washington

I know there is a Big 12 and SEC bias in the voting, but what reason did Nebraska pass TCU in the coaches poll?

The win against Kansas State was impressive along with the win at Washington, but TCU's resume at this point is better.

TCU gets penalized for struggling at SMU, while Nebraska's hideous effort against 1-4 division 1-AA South Dakota State is ignored.

Another reason why rankings in October are a bad idea.
