Manchester United: Major Overall Loss Questions Glazers' Financial Tactics

Zaakir HoosenOct 8, 2010

If the Glazers aren't already disliked in many United circles, it could get worse as full operating figures were announced, including a massive £83.64 million loss.

Large interest returns on a loan is one of the key factors in the loss, and are leading several to question whether the Glazers' tactics are working or backfiring at the club.

Interestingly, United have made a mega £100 million in profits, which could be seen as a positive though the losses are growing into an undesirable total, now standing at a £521.7 million overall in debt.

The Glazers managed to hold off attempts by Red Knights group, who feel the Glazers don't have the club's interest at heart and a major turnaround is needed.

A point of contention would be the increasing partnerships that United have signed into, allowing for a massive increase in the commercial growth of the club, which shows the impact the Glazers have in terms of creating a suitable business model for the club.

This could be where many passionate fans disagree, as they see the Glazers' interest more as a business deal rather than managing one of the top supported football teams on the planet.

In terms of the profits made by the club, media revenue has been a key contributor with a £5.1 million increase, while match day revenue has slipped a bit.

Many have called for a boycott, asking fans not to attend games at Old Trafford in support of the anti-Glazer campaign. The boycott hasn't really happened as thousands of Manchester United diehards fill the stadium weekly.

A major positive for United is the overall turnover, £286.41 million, which proves its dominance over city rivals and now Arab-owned Manchester City, who last week reported an overall turnover of £125 million.

When comparing the figures to the previous year, one notable difference is the profits made from the players sold, largely due to the mega £80 million deal when Ronaldo left for Real Madrid in 2009.

While matters on the field might be the ones that really concern United boss Sir Alex, he won't be overly fazed by the massive loss—although the lack of transfer business might be an indication that the budget is a little tight, even though he and chief executive David Gill might say differently.

United completed only three transfers in the summer, including Chris Smalling from Fulham followed by Javier Hernandez from Mexican outfit Guadalajara. The last of the signings was a shock move for Portuguese winger/forward Bebe for roughly £8 million; Bebe is a total unknown with lots of potential according to many United scouts.

Nevertheless, United on the pitch will play West Brom on the 16th following the international break.
