5) SummerSlam 1997
1 of 7
We Start off with the 10th annual SummerSlam, SummerSlam 1997.
It was tough for me to Choose between SummerSlam 1997 and 2003. But I choose 1997.
This edition of SummerSlam started off great with a Steel Cage match Between Mankind and Triple H (was still called Hunter Hurst Helmsley). This match went along with Chyna helping Triple H a few times before Mankind had the match won but decided to climb back up the cage and then Mick Foley took off the Mankind costume (To become Dude Love) and nailed Triple H with a Diving Elbow from the Top of the Cage before escaping the cage.We then got a Good Match from the Underrated Golddust and the Late Brian Pillman. Then after 3 average matches we got Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Owen Hart for the IC Title. It was a Great back and forth match before Owen messed up a piledriver and broke Austin's neck and Austin after a few minutes was able to barely get a roll up to win the IC Title. I feel that this is a very underrated match due to the memory from it is Austin's neck being broken. The Main Event had Bret Hart vs The Undertaker for the WWF Title with Shawn Michaels as the Special Referee. This was a Great Match from Two of the Greatest Skilled Wrestlers for 26 Minutes with Paul Bearer, Owen Hart, and Brian Pillman interfering. Also with Bret kicking out of the Chokeslam and Undertaker getting out of the Sharpshooter. Most people know the Ending which was Bret Spitting in Shawns face and Shawn accidentaly hitting Undertaker with a steel chair and Bret winning the WWF Title for the last time.
4) SummerSlam 1994
2 of 7
Next we have the 7th Annual SummerSlam, SummerSlam 1994.
This time we had an 8 minute Women's Title match of Alundra Blaze vs Bull Nakano, which by todays Divas is like having an Ironman Match. Alundra won with a German Suplex. We haven't seen a Diva win with a real wrestling move since the days of Trish Stratus! The next match was a Good Intercointinental Title match between Razor Ramon and Diesel (with Shawn Michaels). Razor won after Shawn accidentaly hit Diesel with Sweet Chin Music after Razor ducked out of the way. After a Lex "Juice" Lugar match and King Mabel falling down and being pinned by Double JJ we got Bret Hart vs Owen Hart in a Steel Cage Match (Blue Bar Cage) for the WWF Title. This was a Phenomenal Cage Match, I think it was one of the Best Cage Matches Ever. It went back and forth for about 30 minutes with Owen Hitting a Great Piledriver on Bret. Bret won when Owen's Leg got stuck in the Cage and Bret was able to climb down. However, when Bret hit the floor, he was attacked by Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and Owen. Davey Boy Smith was also attacked by Jim and then Bret was locked up inside the cage with Owen and Jim and beaten before the other Hart Brothers were able to get into the cage and Owen and Jim escaped. The Main Event was Ted Dibiase's Undertaker vs the returning Paul Bearer's Undertaker (I know a bit confusing). The entrance of the Real Undertaker was Awesome with Paul Bearer having the urn shoot of lights and stuff. The Real Undertaker won after 3 Tombstone Piledrivers and the Fake Taker was put in to a casket and was never to be seen again.
3) SummerSlam 1998
3 of 7
Here we have the 11th annual SummerSlam, SummerSlam 1998.
After a WWF European Title Match between D-Lo and Val Venis which D-Lo wins by DQ, a 6 man Tag team bout between the Oddities and Kai en Tai which is won by the Oddities and a Hair Match between X-Pac and Double JJ Jeff Jarrett which X-Pac wins we have a Mix Tag Team Match. The Match is Marc Mero and Jacqueline vs Sable and Edge, making his PPV Debut. This a Good Match with Sable and Jacqueline Actually Wrestling, something most of Todays Divas forgot how to do. Also, I never notice that much because Sable was usually in Bra and Panties matches but Sable was a Damn Good Wrestler. Anyway, it is a Great Debut by Edge and Edge and Sable win after Edge picked up Sable and Planted her on to Mero for the pin after Marc got hit with a low blow.
The Next Match was a Lion's Den Match between Owen Hart and Ken Shamrock. It was like MMA meets WWF and it wasn't that Great. Owen was able to lock on the Sharpshooter but Shamrock was able to break out of it by climbing up the 10ft cage. Shamrock won after Owne tapped put to the Ankle Lock. Then there was a Handicapped Falls Count Anywhere WWF Tag Title Match between The New Age Outlaws and Kane and Mankind (c) but Kane was absent so Mankind was by himself. Not the Greatest Match but Mick was able to Help make it seem better than average for the 5 minutes it lasted.
Next was One of the Greatest Ladder Matches Ever to Not Have Shawn Michaels in it and just a Great Ladder Match between Triple H and The Rock (c) for the Intercontinental Title. It was an Awesome Match from 2 of the Greatest and showed the Athleteism of 2 of the Future WWF Champs. Great Spots included a People's Elbow on to Triple H who was laying on a Ladder and a Rock Bottom. Triple H wins the IC Title after Chyna nailed The Rock with a Low Blow. This is a Great Match to watch and would Recomend Watching it to Anyone.
The Main Event was The Undertaker challenging Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Title. This was a Great follow Up to the Ladder Match as it showcased 2 of the Greatest Wrestlers. It was what you Would Expect from an Austin v Taker Match. Great Spots Included a Chokeslam on Austin from the Apron in to the ring, Undertaker hitting a Leg Drop From the Top Turnbuckle onto the Announce Table and Through it, Undertaker Kicking out of a Stone Cold Stunner and Austin doing the same of another Chokeslam. Through Out this match you had the feeling that Stone Cold Could Lose the WWF Title cause Undertaker was that Great. It ended with Austin Countering Old School in to a Low Blow and then Nailing Undertaker with a Stunner to Retain the WWF Title. After the Match Undertaker got right back up and Handed Austin the Smoking Skull Belt. Another Great SummerSlam Match.
2) SummerSlam 2002
4 of 7
Here we have the 15th annual SummerSlam, SummerSlam 2002.
This edition of the Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer would awarded the Best Major Show of 2002 by Wrestling Observer Newsletter (Dave Meltzer). This SummerSlam started out with a match that would 4 years later be two parts of a Wrestlemania Main Event, with Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio. When I went back and watched some old WWF/E video, I was Amazed that This would be the opening to a SummerSlam and not a Wrestlemania. Anyway, this was Rey Mysterio's WWE PPV Debut and who better to be in the ring with than Kurt Angle. Now I'm not a Big Kurt Angle Fan, but I do respect and enjoy what he can do in the Squared Circle. Back to the Match, it was a Great Starter Match witj Rey attacking Angle from behind and then later hitting the 619 and Kurt doing his thing in the ring with German Suplexes and also Mysterio hitting Kurt with a Senton from the Ring over the ref and to the floor. Kurt wins by reversing a Hurricanrana from the Top turnbuckle into the Ankle Lock and Mysterio tapping out. Next we were given Ric Flair vs Chris Jericho. An Undercard Match between two of the Greatest In Ring Performers Ever. Though it seemed as though Jericho helped Flair with the match, well Flair was in his 50's so you can't really blame the guy. Flair wins with a low blow and then getting Jericho to tap out to the Figure 4.
Next you have Edge vs Eddie Guerrero in a Good high flying match. It was before Edge had his many surgerys to where he is now relegated to more grapple wrestling. Well Eddie going for the Frog Splash with Edge getting his knees up. There was lot of counters in this match and was back and forth till Edge hit the Spear to win. Next was The Un-Americans (Christian and Lance Storm)(c) vs Booker T and Golddust. It was a Good Tag Title Match, better than anything we have seen lately. The Un-Americans won with Test interfering.
Then there is Rob Van Dam vs Chris Benoit (c) for the IC Title. This was a Great Match with Benoit being the perfectionist that he was. This Match was back and forth with Benoit missing the Diving Headbutt and RVD missing the Five Star Frog Splash. Benoit does his suplexes and gets the Crippler Crossface on Van Dam, but Van Dam got out. We Even see RVD lock the Crossface on Benoit! Van Dam Wins the IC Title with the Five Star Frog Splash after a 16 miunte match! The Next match is Undertaker vs Test which is a Good Match with Lance and Christian interfering but both getting chokeslamed and Undertaker Wins with the Tombstone on Test.
Then we get the Return Match of HBK Shawn Michaels after 4 years in a Unsactioned Street Fight Against Triple H. This is the Match of the PPV with so many great spots. Well what would you expect from a HBK match with Triple H. There is the Moonsault off the Turnbuckle through a table and Shawn with the Heartbreak Elbow Drop from a 12 ft ladder. Shawn Wins by Reversing the Pedigree in to a Jacknife pin. After the match Triple H hits HBK with a sledgehammer twice. This is 1 of my favorite matches to watch. Who else but Shawn Michaels could put on such a Great Match after 4 years being retired! The Main Event is Brock Lesnar vs The Rock (c) for the WWE Undisputed Title. This is a Good Match with Rock making Lesnar look like a Millon Dollars. The Rock even Rock Bottoms Paul Heymen through an annouce table. Lesnar hits the Rock Bottom on The Rock. Lesnar Wins after countering the People's Elbow and hitting an F-5!
1) Summerslam 1995
5 of 7
Yeah King Mabel vs Diesel for the WWF Title!!!
JUST KIDDING!!! Neither of those 2 could put together even an Average Match!
Though The Ladder Match Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon (c) for The IC Title was Great!,
the Rest of the PPV Included Bret Hart vs Isaac Yankem (Kane's first Gig), Jerry Lawler's Dentist and it lasted 16 MINUTES!! Boring, Even The Hitman couldn't make that match Look any good!
1) SummerSlam 2000
6 of 7
For Me there was only one SummerSlam better than SummerSlam 2002 and it is the 13th annual Summerslam, SummerSlam 2000.
This starts out with Right to Censor vs Too Cool and there isn't much to say except Scotty 2 Hotty missed the Worm and was Then Superkicked by Stevie Richards and pinned. Then there was X-Pac vs Road Dogg which is not my cup of coffee. X-Pac wins after a low blow and an X-Factor and Road Dogg attacks Pac after the match. Next was Chyna and "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero vs Trish Stratus and Val Venis (c) in a Intergender Tag match where the winner would win the IC Title. Eddie helped Val until The women where tagged in where Chyna hit a Military Press Slam on Trish and pinned her to Become a 2 time Intercontinental Champion. Then there was Tazz vs Jerry Lawler and Tazz carried the match until with the ref down Tazz had Lawler in the Tazzmission until JR hit him in the head with a glass jar and Lawler got the win.
Next was Shane McMahon (c) vs Steve Blackman in a Harcore Match for the Hardcore Title and it was an okay match until Test and Albert interfered and then Shane climed the 50 foot SummerSlam Set only to be knocked off by Blackman. Then Blackman hit a Leg Drop from 30ft to win the Hardcore Title. The Next Match was a 2 outta 3 falls match between Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit and It was a Great Match from 2 of the Greatest Pure Wresters ever. Benoit wins the 1st fall after reversing Jericho's Liontamer into the Crippler Crossface and Jericho tapped out. Jericho wins the 2nd fall after reciving 2 Belly to Belly Suplexes from Benoit, Jericho reverses the 3rd one in to the Walls of Jericho and Benoit taps out. Benoit wins the 3rd and Final Fall after countering a Cradle by Jericho into a Cradle of his own and pins Jericho after holding the ring ropes.
The Next Match is 1/2 the reason SS 2000 is My 1# and it is the 1st TLC Match with Edge and Christian (c) vs The Dudley Boyz vs The Hardy Boyz for the WWF Tag Titles. This is one of the Greatest SummerSlam matches if not The Greastest. At Wrestlemania 2000, these 3 teams fought in a Triangle Ladder Match for the Tag Titles and Edge and Christians were the winners, That match had Great spots like Jeff Hardy Hit the Swanton Bomb on Bubba Ray and Matt Hardy with Edge and Christian on top of the Table 16 ft high and Matt getting tossed off through a table and the Lasting Image of E and C Sitting on the Table on Two Ladders holding the Titles. Okay Back to the SummerSlam match was nearly the same type of match except it has Tables and Chairs in the Title. Well in the SummerSlam Match it too was Great as you had 3D on Christian, Jeff attempting the Same Swanton move that he hit @ Wrestlemania but missing, Lita getting involved for the Hardys and then getting Speared by Edge (Forshowdowing for 5 years later), and E and C pushing Bubba Ray off of the ladder and through 4 tables 2 stacked on 2. Jeff hanging on to the belts with out a ladder and getting knocked down by E and C with a Ladder. Edge and Christian win the Belts just like @ Wrestlemania 2000.
Next there was a Stinkface match between Terri and The Kat and it was 2 divas running around in Thongs, not much else to say but Terri won. Then there was The Undertaker vs Kane and this match never got started as Kane attacked Taker on the ramp and the match was both taking turns hitting each other with chairs, steel steps and low blows. The match ends when Undertaker rips off Kane's Mask (Ah The good ole days when Kane wore a Mask) and Kane ran to the Back. The Main Event was a Triple Threat Match with Triple H vs Kurt Angle vs The Rock (c) for the WWF Title. The story was that Kurt was in love with Stephanie McMahon Helmsley and Triple H was pissed off over it. Anyway before The Rock arrives, Triple H attacks Kurt all over the ring and Tries to Pedigree Kurt through an Announce Table ,but the table breaks prematurly and Kurt is taken to the back on a stretcher. Then The Rock arrives and he and Triple H start to fight 1 on 1 until Triple H tries to bring Kurt back to the Ring but The Rock uses the SummerSlam set to hurt Triple H. Then after the match gets back to the Ring, Stephanie tries to hit The Rock with The WWF Title Belt, but hits Triple H by accident but Triple H Kicks out. Then about 10 minutes later Kurt comes back after Steph asked him to help Triple H but he stops Triple H from winning the WWF Title. Then after The Rock and Kurt have a 5 min 1 on 1 match, Triple H goes to hit Kurt bit hits Steph by accident and gets hit by Kurt. In the End The Rock disposes of Kurt and Hits The People's Elbow on Triple H to Retain the WWF Title. This is one of my favorite Matches to watch and one of the Wackiest Triple Threat Matches Ever.
That's All Folks!
