What went down when The Samoan Werewolf and The OTC were in the same ring, at the same time, ahead of a high-stakes championship clash?

Find out with this recap of the May 4 broadcast, featuring grades and analysis from each match and segment.

  • Seth Rollins Kicked Off Raw

    2 of 6
    WrestleMania 42

Last Time in Action: Seth Rollins lost to Gunther (WrestleMania 42, April 18)

Moments after a face-to-face altercation with world heavyweight champion Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins entered the arena to a thunderous ovation, only to be attacked from behind by Bron Breakker.

The Badass brutally assaulted The Architect, dropping him face-first into the barricade, then sending him shoulder-first into the ring steps.

Breakker assaulted security before being backed off and up the ramp by Raw general manager Adam Pearce. Not finished with Rollins, he pushed past security and destroyed his former mentor with a spear.

The heel stood tall, talked trash to Rollins, and made his way up the ramp to close things out.

    Grade

    A

    Top Takeaways

  • "You're in my way," Rollins told Reigns in their brief face-to-face. This felt like a teaser for a major main event down the line, perhaps as soon as SummerSlam or as late as WrestleMania 43.
  • Breakker looked like a killer here, tearing through Rollins and leaving no doubt as to who the physically superior competitor is. Of course, based on booking trends, that would seem to suggest that Rollins goes over Saturday at Backlash.
  • Finn Balor vs. JD McDonagh

    3 of 6
    Monday Night RAW

Last Time in Action: Finn Balor defeated JD McDonagh (Raw, April 20)

Backstage, women's world champion Liv Morgan grilled Roxanne Perez about how Balor got into the Judgment Day's clubhouse and why she was talking to him. The Prodigy pledged her allegiance to the faction before Morgan tapped her and Raquel Rodriguez to win the women's tag titles...as long as there are no more secrets.

In the arena, Balor squared off with McDonagh for the second time in as many weeks.

The inaugural universal champion dominated early, but interference from Dominik Mysterio turned the tide in McDonagh's favor, just in time for Perez to make her presence felt entering the commercial break.

Balor fought his way back into the match, overcame an ugly Spanish Fly, and appeared poised to deliver the Coup de Grace until Mysterio crotched him on the top rope. Referee Jessika Carr kicked Mysterio out, but the numbers game proved too much as Morgan tossed Perez the timekeeper's hammer and the Prodigy utilized it on the babyface, setting up a headbutt and a win for McDonagh.

    Result

    McDonagh defeated Balor

    Grade

    B

    Top Takeaways

  • This was overbooked, but it made sense within the context of the story. Mysterio has unfinished business with Balor and obviously wanted him to lose. Meanwhile, there was the dark cloud of Perez's allegiances hanging overhead and those, at least for the time being, appeared to have been answered with her involvement in the finish.
  • The end game here is still Perez vs. Morgan for the women's world title and that should be a strong match, if and when it finally happens.
  • Speaking of match quality, Balor and McDonagh were a tad off at different points, including the aforementioned Spanish Fly, which could have been far worse for both men than it was.

Penta and Je'Von Evans vs. Ethan Page and Rusev

    4 of 6
    Monday Night RAW

Last Time in Action: Penta defeated Rusev (Raw, April 27); Ethan Page defeated Je'Von Evans (Raw, April 20)

Backstage, Paul Heyman informed The Vision that Austin Theory will battle Joe Hendry later tonight.

As the war over the Intercontinental Championship wages on, titleholder Penta partnered with Je'Von Evans to battle "All Ego" Ethan Page and Rusev in tag team action.

A back-and-forth match saw Penta escape Page's Twisted Grin, only to deliver a Penta Driver, but fail to keep the former NXT champion down for three ahead of the commercial break.

Back from the timeout, Penta created separation and was inches from a hot tag when Rusev pulled Evans off the apron. With no partner to tag, Penta found himself on the receiving end of a beatdown at the hands of the heels.

The champion finally tagged The Young OG in, and Evans exploded into the match, soaring through the air as he took the fight to the opposition. The action broke down from there, with Evans teasing a huge leap of faith, only for Page to send him to the floor.

Elsewhere, Rusev delivered a uranage on Penta onto the announce table, and All Ego pinned the luchador following a fisherman buster for the win.

    Result

Page and Rusev defeated Penta and Evans

    Grade

    B+

    Top Takeaways

  • This was a fun, action-packed tag team match with great energy. Page continues to look like a star of the immediate future while Rusev has been completed rejuvenated since his WrestleMania 42 performance.
  • There are far worse options than building the Raw midcard around these four, especially with a worker's title like the Intercontinental Championship on the line.
  • Never has it been more refreshing not to see a Superstar take a needless bump from the top rope, through an announce table than tonight. Evans does not need to take that risk on a random episode of Raw. Save it for the premium live event. Page getting heat off of stopping him was a great call.
  • Sol Ruca Signs With Raw

    5 of 6
    Monday Night RAW

Last Time in Action: Sol Ruca lost to Zaria (NXT, April 21)

Newest NXT call-up Sol Ruca joined Raw general manager Adam Pearce in the squared circle to sign her main roster contract.

Before she could put pen to paper, women's intercontinental champion Becky Lynch interrupted, spoiling her big moment and confronting Pearce.

Ruca cut off her ramblings and called her a "big-headed bitch," before signing her name on the dotted line. She threatened Big Time Becks, warning that if she ever interrupts her again, Ruca will not only kick her ass, but snatch her soul.

Lynch tried a sneak attack but clocked Pearce, then ate a less-than-stellar Sol Snatcher as the newcomer stood tall.

    Grade

    B+

    Top Takeaways

  • There are not many better ways to introduce a newcomer and immediately make her feel special than by programming her against a future Hall of Famer and the greatest women's wrestler in WWE history (B/R said it) in Lynch.
  • Ruca's Sol Snatcher was not as picture perfect as usual, but this was a huge moment for her and one that kicked off a feud that should elevate her right out of the gate.
  • Backstage, The Usos issued words of warning toward Jacob Fatu ahead of tonight's main event contract signing. Because another contract signing is exactly what this otherwise strong episode needs.
  • Joe Hendry vs. Austin Theory

    6 of 6
    Monday Night RAW

Last Time in Action: Joe Hendry lost to Keanu Carver (NXT, April 21); Austin Theory, Logan Paul, and IShowSpeed lost to The Usos and LA Knight (WrestleMania 42, April 18)

After an irate Logan Paul interrupted Joe Hendry's "Fire Logan Paul" song for the second time in as many weeks, Hendry squared off with The Vision's other tag team champion, Theory.

A standard match saw Hendry fend off Theory, only for Paul to interfere, drawing a disqualification.

The Street Profits made the save and fought off the heels, only for Bron Breakker to appear and take them out. Seth Rollins reappeared, too.

    Result

    Hendry defeated Theory via disqualification

    Grade

    C+

    Top Takeaways

  • Apparently, the opening segment did such a poor job of informing the audience that Breakker is an unstoppable force that we needed to see it again.
  • This was less about the match and its participants than everything that occurred after it, which was repetitive and did nothing to improve upon what we already saw earlier in the show.
