Is “Dashing” Cody Rhodes Becoming “Boy Toy” (1992-1995) Shawn Michaels?

Okay so this is my first article for Bleacher Report and I’m am happy to finally be doing this. Hopefully nobody has written about this and if so I’m sorry.  

It seems of late that WWE has finally given Cody Rhodes an actual gimmick after leaving him in midair after drafting him to Smack Down. This Gimmick is that of Cody being voted the most handsome wrestler by the Divas. He has since been known as “Dashing” Cody Rhodes.

While watching Money in the Bank and Friday (7/23/10)’s Smack Down I have began to see many similarities between “Dashing” Cody Rhodes and Shawn Michaels’ first singles gimmick as “The Boy Toy”.

After Shawn Super Kicked Marty Jannetty and threw him through The Barber Shop glass window which signaled the end of The Rockers, Shawn embarked on one of the most successful singles careers in Pro Wrestling History.

Shawn was given Sensational Sherri Martel as his manager and she sung the 1^st version of his entrance music we all grew to know and love “Sexy Boy”. Sherri also carried a mirror down to the ring which Shawn would then admire him self in the mirror.

Shawn went on to face Bret Hart in the first WWF/E ladder match and win his 1^st Intercontinental Title against the British Bulldog on Saturday Night’s Main Event in October 1992.

Cody Rhodes was a Tag Team champion with Hardcore Holly and then Ted Dibiase Jr. as “Priceless”.  He and Ted then joined up with Randy Orton to create the Heel stable of Legacy. After Legacy imploded at Wrestlemania 26, (during which Cody was punted in the head and gone from TV for a month), Cody Rhodes was drafted to Smack Down as part of the WWE 2010 Supplementary Draft. Late last month he was given the Gimmick of “Dashing” Cody Rhodes where he was given a new theme song and on the Titantron a digital Mirror which he admires himself in. Also, on last night’s Smack Down we were shown a new little segment where Cody gives us Beauty tips.

Here is a list of a few similarities I have seen between “Dashing” Cody Rhodes and “Boy Toy/Sexy Boy” Shawn Michaels:

-         Both started WWE Career as a Tag Team which then imploded (Shawn-The Rockers, Cody- Priceless, later Legacy)

-          Both had a mirror in which they admire themselves in (Shawn had a physical mirror while Cody has a digital mirror.)

-         Both gained a new nickname referring to their good looks (Shawn- Sexy Boy/Boy Toy, Cody- Dashing).

-         Both where given new Entrance Music and apparel (Shawn- “Sexy Boy, Cody- “Smoking Mirror”)

-         Both new gimmicks are narcissistic

In my opinion the gimmicks of “Dashing” Cody Rhodes and “Sexy Boy/Boy Toy” Shawn Michaels are very familiar. All they need to be mirror images (pun intended) of each other is for Cody to be given a manager, perhaps Rosa Mendes if WWE decides actually do something with her or one of the members of Lay-Cool if they break up (which I feel they will).
