Heisman Favorite: Mark Ingram Looks To Make History This Season

Daniel DinunzioJul 22, 2010

Headlines everywhere surrounding college football the last couple of days have been swirling about players and connections with agents.  Let's take a look at the defending Heisman Trophy Winner, Alabama running back Mark Ingram.

Ingram is an absolute beast.  He's a strong, physical runner who runs on instinct and has the ability to cut it inside or take it up the sideline.  What I love most about Ingram's style of running is his ability to deliver the crushing blow to the defender.

Teams can stack eight players in the box, but the one that is left unguarded better be ready to try and stop this train coming right at him.  Ingram is 5'10" and weighs 215 lbs., so it is clear the punch that he carries.

Sure people are going to criticize him for not having breakaway speed, but neither did Emmitt Smith and look at the career he had.  I'm confident that Ingram is going to make a lot of money at the next level and have a very successful NFL career.

What's even scarier to think about than the possibility of Ingram becoming only the second two-time Heisman winner is the talent he has around him.  Nick Saban has transcended the Alabama Crimson Tide program and he expects nothing but perfection.

Another great quality about Ingram is that he is far more concerned with how his team performs then his individual performance.  At the end of the day it is all about winning and that is what makes Mark Ingram such a great football player.

Last season during his Heisman campaign he averaged nearly 6.1 yards a carry while amazing 1,658 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.

Add to that his 334 yards receiving on 32 receptions and another three touchdowns, and  it becomes quite clear the type of dynamic player Ingram is.  Don't forget he is an explosive punt-returner and adds another dimension to special teams.

Mark Ingram has made it clear what type of football player he is.  His team-first mentality has benefited his teammates and his own achievement on the field.  Headed into 2010 every team is going to be aiming for the Crimson Tide.

Of course they are going to, as Alabama is the defending national champions.  That just means Ingram and company are going to have to bring it all each and every weekend to remain on top.

As evident with Tim Tebow it is extremely difficult to repeat as a Heisman Trophy winner.  The standards and difficulty in achieving that goal are on an entirely different level when it comes to degree of difficulty.

Archie Griffin is the only player to have won it twice, and for good reason.

It's a monumental task.  Especially in today's day and age when there are so many other terrific college football players at Division I schools all across America.

If anyone can do it, Mark Ingram can.  The entire world saw how much it meant for him to raise that trophy in New York City.  His emotions and words speak for themselves; to what kind of person he is and how he carries himself.

Winning it a second time would be an unbelievable achievement.

Heading into the college football season, there's no reason to think he can't get the job done.

Until then, he has got to be the odds-on favorite.

Winning a second Heisman Trophy would be history for Ingram and the entire Alabama football family.
