The UFC Ultimate Fighter Season 11 Champion: Court "The Crusher" McGee

Dale De SouzaJun 23, 2010

Yesterday, a press release was put out by Spike TV officials saying that a strong-standing 2.4 million viewers tuned in to the 11th Ultimate Fighter season finale.

Many a story came out of this season's Ultimate Finale, but the one that has captured the hearts of the millions and millions of MMA fans worldwide was the story of a man who had fallen into an abyss and was believed to have no way out.

After entry into the house, this man went two rounds in a fight that even esteemed UFC President Dana White felt should have gone just one more round.

The man was given a second shot at the spot that many men have wanted ever since the first season, and when the proverbial ball was tossed into his court by White, the man ran with it.

While doing so, one standing opposition was outscored, and the other, a favorite of the tournament, succumbed to a technical submission win by rear naked choke.

The rear naked choke would help this man secure the win in the second round of his Finale fight with a fighter who had the same hunger, but a different road to the finals.

I think everyone knows by now that the man was none other than Court "The Crusher" McGee, a man who at one time was a heroin user before he got into the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.

This is a man who was pronounced clinically dead after overdosing in 2005.

The overdose was supposed to kill McGee. Someone else was supposed to be where McGee was this past Saturday.

It would take a miracle to keep McGee alive, but that's exactly what happened..

The doctors resuscitated McGee. He was given a second chance at life and has been clean since 2006.

When Dana White said that Court McGee was the "dark horse" of TUF 11, he wasn't kidding.

McGee in TUF 11 was like the New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl victory: Only those in close contact could have seen the victory from a mile away.

I certainly can admit that I never could have seen Court in the finals.

Heck, I went for McCray in the finals. I'll admit that.

Nothing against McGee, I just went by who I thought would be the better fighter.

The victory over McCray, though, does prove what we've heard from fighters all across the board.

To illustrate what that is, I'd like to quote the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida:

"If you have a dream, go ahead. It's possible."

I think that as much as it fit Machida's win over Rashad Evans, it fits Court McGee's triumph over adversity equally.

If you believe in second chances, then go out and take your second chance without lending an ear to those who say "it's impossible."

I say nothing's impossible.

I've also said that if the current middleweight king, Anderson Silva, can do the perceived-as-impossible and defeat not only Chael Sonnen at UFC 117, but also Vitor Belfort, then there's a good chance that Silva could vacate the throne, leaving many others to scrap for a shot at the crown.

2.4 Million viewers worldwide tuned in to Spike TV on Saturday night, not only to watch a barn-burner between Matt Hamill and Keith Jardine, but also to watch a man's five-year journey for redemption come full circle as he leaves behind a troubled past, trading it in for a chance to become the best middleweight in the world of MMA.

McGee had himself a tough one on Saturday, but it doesn't stop there.

He had 2.4, almost 2.5 million people worldwide viewing his story unfold in the cage, but once you hit the big time, the numbers can double.

Soon, there could be even more than two million people watching McGee do what he does best.

He's a young cub in a lion's den now that he's officially in the UFC middleweight division, but don't sleep on this Cinderella man.

Should the current king at 185 move up a class, the division's pool gets deeper and deeper.

Who knows? Maybe one day, Court McGee will be the pound-for-pound king of the sport.

Sounds impossible, doesn't it?

Say what you will, but I say nothing's impossible.
