Ring of Honor Focus: Death Before Dishonor VIII Preview

Ken DrabekJun 16, 2010

Ring of Honor's third Internet pay-per-view event takes places this Saturday night from the Ted Reeve Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

"Death Before Dishonor VIII" has a loaded card despite currently only featuring six announced matches. A couple more impromptu matches will likely go down in Toronto, but let's take a look at the six that have been advertised thus far.

The 2nd Annual Toronto Gauntlet - Colt Cabana vs. Steve Corino vs. Eddie Edwards vs. Roderick Strong vs. Shawn Daivari vs. TBA

The winner of this gauntlet match will earn a future shot at the ROH world championship.

Davey Richards came out on top in the Toronto gauntlet last year and has since become one of the top competitors in Ring of Honor. Richards has yet to capture the championship but he gets another chance in the main event of DBDVIII .

This year six wrestlers will once again compete for the chance at being the No. 1 contender. Only five men have been announced, who will be the sixth? I'd put my money on Canadian star Tyson Dux, who is advertised to appear the show but has yet to be booked in a match.

The odds on favorite is Roderick Strong, who has had several chances to claim the ROH title in 2010 but has fallen short each time.

Now that he has aligned himself with Truth Martini and the House of Truth, Strong may finally have the missing piece to the puzzle and he is my pick to come out on top in the gauntlet.

Austin Aries vs. Delirious

A-Double's deliberate attempt to injure Delirious on HDNet comes to a head in Toronto as the two will square off in a match billed as "Insanity meets Ego."

These two recently battled at "Supercard of Honor V" and that match ended in a DQ when Delirious refused to release a chokehold on Aries. The tension has been building for months now and this match could get out-of-control if the masked man has his way.

Aries is arguably the top heel in ROH and the only man to hold the ROH title on two occasions. He has spent much of his time lately focusing on managing the team of Rhett Titus and Kenny King and not nearly enough time competing in the squared circle.

Titus and King are both banned from ringside for this one, which could prove to be the advantage Delirious needs to walk away with a win.

In a recent promo, Delirious was seen wearing red and black instead of his usual green and black colors. He promised "red poison" for Aries, which is a sign that the more vicious side of the masked madman is going to be on display at the iPPV .

Expect Delirious to get his revenge on Aries in Toronto.

Pick 6 Contender Series Match - Christopher Daniels vs. Kenny Omega

"The Fallen Angel" has been unbeatable since making his return to ROH and has quickly climbed up to the No. 2 spot in the "Pick 6" standings.

At "Death Before Dishonor VIII," Daniels will face the red-hot Kenny Omega, fresh off an impressive showing in New Japan Pro Wrestling's "Best of the Super Juniors Tournament."

Omega returns to his home country with a chance to hand Daniels his first loss since returning to ROH .

This could steal the show. Both men are incredibly athletic and want to climb the rankings towards a shot at the championship.

Daniels desperately wants to prove that he still belongs at the top of the heap in ROH and a victory over Omega would certainly help his cause. Daniels is on a roll; expect it to continue.

Kevin Steen vs. El Generico

I wrote a much more in-depth look at the Steen /Generico feud a few weeks back. Check that article out here .

This match could very well be something special. The feud that has developed over the past six months between these two men has been one of the very best and most interesting in all of professional wrestling.

Kevin Steen and El Generico are going to put it all on the line against each other for this one.

If this feud is going to continue, which I think is more than likely will, expect Steen to somehow come out on top.

I wouldn't be surprised if Steen's mentor, Steve Corino, played a part in the outcome of this match. Regardless, this is one of the most hyped matches on the card and it should deliver on every level.

ROH World Tag Team Championship (No DQ) - The Kings of Wrestling vs. The Briscoes

Things certainly got much more intense between these two rival teams after the Kings laid out the patriarch of the Briscoe family on HDNet this week. Executive producer Jim Cornette has made this a No DQ match, and the Briscoes are out for blood.

Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli won the ROH tag team titles from the Briscoes in controversial fashion at "The Big Bang" iPPV in April.

Hero's trademark elbow pad did in the Briscoes after an intense battle that many fans have called the match of the year thus far.

More of the same should be expected from these two teams as the hatred between them only grows stronger. The Briscoes are threatening to kill the Briscoes in Toronto, so it is apparent that their anger is at an all-time high.

Jay and Mark can become seven-time ROH champs and cement their status as the greatest tag team in the history of the promotion if they can put down the Kings in Toronto.

It could go either way, but I'm picking the Hero and Castagnoli to retain in another incredible outing between these teams.

ROH World Championship Match - Tyler Black vs. Davey Richards

One of the most anticipated championship bouts in the history of ROH. Take a look at the incredible hype video from "That Wrestling Show" on YouTube:

If that doesn't give you chills or get you amped up about Davey Richards vs. Tyler Black, I don't know what will. Without question this is the biggest match of both of their careers.

Can Black prove, once and for all, that he deserves to wear the ROH world championship? Can he prove his doubters wrong by defeating one of the hottest rising stars in the wrestling world today?

Can Richards finally grab the elusive brass ring and become the champion of ROH? Can he prove that he can stand on his own and excel as a singles wrestler? Can he prove that he is the best in the world?

In a day and age where wrestling storylines always seem to revolve around good vs. evil, it is refreshing to see a main event for a world title where the main focus of the match is the squarely on the championship. Black and Richards are two of the most athletically gifted wrestlers competing in North America today and this match has the potential to be a Match of the Year candidate.

If anything, this match alone will be well worth the $14.95 the show costs to stream on gofightlive.tv.

It's another tough one to call, but I'm going with my gut and predicting we will see a new champion crowned in Toronto.

"Death Before Dishonor VIII" looks like a solid card from top to bottom and should please most ROH fans. If you aren't familiar with the promotion, this show is as good as any to check out.

While most of the wrestling community will be buzzing about the WWE PPV on Sunday night, the best wrestling action of the weekend will be taking place on Saturday in Toronto.
