Who's the Next Opponent for Paul Williams? Not Kermit Cintron

Tony BriscoeJun 10, 2010

In an exclusive interview with Paul William’s manager, George Peterson, Eastside Boxing was able to determine one thing for sure—Williams won’t be fighting Kermit “The Frog” Cintron again.

In one of the most bizarre incidents in the history of boxing, Cintron apparently fell out of the ring during his fight against Williams, yet upon video analysis it almost appears as if Cintron jumped out of the ring. Peterson believes that Cintron leaped out of the ring to stop the fight he knew he would lose.

“He did that because he knew he had no defense to what Paul was doing,” said Peterson. “It's not like this was the first time he's found a way out. On three other occasions he found a way out in a fight. It was the same drama in the fight with Paul—it's nothing new with Cintron. We suspected something would happen before the fight.”

Peterson went as far to say that he was “offended” when asked if there would be a rematch between Williams and Cintron.

Williams called out three fighters after the bout against Cintron—Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and Miguel Cotto. Williams (39-1 27 KOs) hasn’t been able to land big fights in his extensive boxing career, but he could change that if he is able to land a fight with any of the boxers he called out.

Unfortunately for Williams, a lot of boxers may be unavailable. Mayweather and Pacquiao are deeply involved in their drug testing soap opera, and aren’t really considering other fights at this point. Cotto, on the other hand, is looking to avenge his loss to Antonio Margarito in another Puerto Rican-Mexican instant classic.

However, Williams could still land a quality fight in the near future by fighting Sergio Martinez or Andre Berto.

Williams poses a big threat to opponents with his tall physique (6’1), long arms (82”) and high punching-production.
