PGA TOUR: Saturday Morning Report at Jack's Memorial Tournament

Andy ReistetterJun 5, 2010

Featured Columnist Andy Reistetter is on site at the Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio a few miles outside Columbus, Ohio.

Here are the Top 5 story lines after 36 holes at the Memorial:

1. Weather, Weather, Weather…

Some say the bad weather legacy associated with the Memorial Tournament has its origin in Shateyoranyah, the Chief of the Wyandot Indian Tribe.

Also known as Chief Leatherlips, there is a monument in his honor not far from Muirfield Village just across the Scioto River.

Back in 1810 he was executed by his own people allegedly for becoming too close to the white man, signing away native land, and for witchcraft.

The execution took place at the entrance to caves that were used as a shelter from the weather and a place to hide from other hostile tribes.

Perhaps as he was unable to seek shelter he would like us to seek shelter from rainy weather for all of eternity?

Recent lore has Barbara Nicklaus making trips to his monument and leaving a glass of gin as a peace offering to try to alleviate the bad weather conditions of the Memorial.

All we know for sure is that if the PGA TOUR recognized a tournament that was consistently challenged by bad weather the winner would be the Memorial.

Not only do they persevere through it, but because of the challenge, they are one of the best organized, focused, and well-staged tournaments on tour.

This posting in the tournament offices written by Chief Anonymous says it all:

Whether the weather be fine,

Or whether the weather be not.

Whether the weather be cold,

Or whether the weather be hot.

We'll weather the weather,

Whatever the weather,

Whether we like it or not.

Current update at the Memorial… after double weather delays on each of the first two days the tee times for this morning were moved up to 7:30 a.m. only to be delayed two hours due to a heavy thunderstorm passing through the area.

Two days, two rounds completed—we will weather the weather and finish come Sunday afternoon or evening!

2. Rookie Rickie Fowler's First Win on the PGA TOUR?

At the halfway point all signs indicate the 21-year-old Fowler will win his first tournament, joining the young winner ranks of 20-year-old Rory McIlroy (Quail Hollow) and 22-year-old Jason Day (HP Byron Nelson).

Fowler’s 13-under score tied Scott Hoch's 1987 record and gives the kid a three stroke lead over Justin Rose with Tim Petrovic and Jim Furyk one stroke back.

After an early bogey the young Puma Tiger has gone 34 holes without a bogey.

On Thursday, the Cowboy from Oklahoma State played five holes in 6-under par with four birdies and an eagle.

The kid is hot and looks to win his first PGA TOUR title.

3. "Rookie in our Minds" Justin Rose's First Win on the PGA TOUR?

We all remember Justin Rose's pitch-in on the last hole of the 1997 Open at Royal Birkdale. The 17-year-old finished T4 and turned pro the next day.

Since then he has played in 161 PGA TOUR events without a win, finishing second three times.

Mark O'Meara won that Open.

Who has aged more in the ensuing 13 years—O'Meara or Rose?

Neither one—right?

Always a "rookie in our minds," it would be nice to see Rose win one before his 30th birthday on July 30th .

4. "Golfer Immortal" Jack Nicklaus the Ultimate Tournament Host

Though 70-year-old Jack Nicklaus' last win on the Champions Tour came in 1996, we see him as the all-time best golfer, player, and humanitarian associated with the game of golf.

If there was ever a role model on how to gracefully transition through all of life's phases—young kid, young professional, husband and father, adult, senior and now another "Mister" in the game of golf—it would have to be Mr. Nicklaus.

This is his tournament and in every aspect of the event is he.

There are no standard bearers or walking scorers in the fairways. Only players and their caddies. Tradition.

Bobby Jones was the tournament's first honoree. Tradition.

Jack's legacy of 73 PGA TOUR and 10 Champions Tour victories. Success.

Tradition and Success equals The Memorial Tournament.

Jack's graceful passage to an immortal throne in golf was personified by that 1986 Masters triumph at the age of 46.

His farewell at the majors:

Though his final competitive Masters was in 2005, the Golden Bear joined longtime friend and fellow golfing legend Arnold Palmer for the first time as honorary starter this year.

His last U.S. Open was the 100th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 2000, the one Tiger won by 15 strokes.

Jack's farewell to the Open at St. Andrews and final wave from the Swilcan Bridge in 2005 was five years ago with his mug on the five pound note.

In the midst of the Tiger Slam, Woods paired with Nicklaus in the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla for the first two rounds.

After captaining the U.S. President's Cup team four times, he and his Muirfield Village Golf Club will host the event in 2013.

The ultimate competition hosted by the ultimate host.

5. On the Lighter Side…

This story concerns a PGA TOUR cougar, no different than the local Bogey Inn variety, and a prominent PGA TOUR champion celebrity…

It happened about 10 years ago when she was still a cougar, though a younger cougar at the time.

Evidently the player celebrity gave her what she wanted—his autograph—and what she did not request—his room number.

Now this player celebrity, who will go nameless, was beyond reproach, the absolute moral authority when it comes to these sorts of things.

In disbelief that this could be so, the lady, whose nickname happens to be Leatherlips, was asked to produce the autographed document.

Upon inspection she was then informed that what was written was not "Room 323" rather "Romans 3:23."

Interesting enough, Romans 3:23 reads "for all have sinned and fell short of the glory of God."

So who knows maybe the cougar was right?

After a few more weather delays, the third round of the 2010 Memorial Tournament is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. local time.

Thank you Leatherlips.
