Things We Learned From The Mayweather/Mosley Fight

Jason CruzMay 5, 2010

The results are in. “Money” is an appropriate nickname for Floyd Mayweather. The perpetual villain, “Money May” outclassed “Sugar” Shane Mosley last Saturday in what everyone hopes is an opening act to the main event of Mayweather/Pacquiao we hope later this year.

After watching the fight, I’ve concluded several things.

1.  Floyd Mayweather can box. Its a thinking man’s game and Mayweather is the best at outboxing his opponent. His counterpunching and defense is second to none. His defense versus the onslaught of punches of Pacquiao would be sensational.

2. Shane Mosley was nervous.  It was apparent in the first round. Even with the second round success, Mosley could not follow up. Mosley did not utilize jabs and bodypunches. He appeared to hesitate in throwing any punches fearful of the counterpunch.

3. Naz Richardson is a great trainer. Yes, Mosley lost, but you have to respect Muhammed’s coaching between rounds.

4. Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant use “dictionary” words. Desultory – I did not know the meaning of this and I consider myself educated. Yet, Lampley used this breezily describing the failure of Mosley to put together combinations and punches.

5. Mayweather’s post-fight interview. Was it me, or did Mayweather seem subdued and less of the obnoxious character he portrays on 24/7. Unlike his last post-fight interview after the Marquez fight, Mayweather was patient with Larry “Longwind” Merchant. He was short and to the point and did not seem irritated with any of the inflammatory questions asked by Merchant.

What all this means is that Mayweather is positioning himself for Manny Pacquiao. The negotiations for the fight will be difficult and contentious.

While the Pac-Man is preoccupied with an election back home, he will come back finding a superior opponent on the horizon.  No doubt Mayweather will have his hands full with Pacquiao’s style and power.  And, Pacquiao will have to deal with the counterpunching and defense of Mayweather.

This fight is bigger than both of them and must be made for the sake of boxing.
