What the WWE Could Do To Improve the Product: Part Three, Other

Jon SainzMay 1, 2010

Here's the third, last and longest (I think) part of this series of articles. In this article I'll address everything I didn't on the previous two. This includes: PPVs, NXT, Divas, Tag Teams and Other.

PPV

This is somewhat complicated, so I'm going to do it month by month.

TOP NEWS

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

January: Royal Rumble. No change here, they can have championship matches and the Royal Rumble as the Main Event.

February: None/King of the Ring. Having no PPV between the Rumble and Wrestlemania would allow the WWE to build up the storylines. They'd have more time and could begin building up Wrestlemania right after the Rumble, instead of having to wait for the next PPV to know for sure who the champion is. If they want to do a PPV anyway, they could go for a King of the Ring (why did they stop doing them?). It should be eight matches (quarterfinals, semifinals and final) or nine/ten if they want to include a secondary title match (US or IC), but no world championship matches.

March: Wrestlemania.   If something works, why change it? Just have a better build up, storylines and bring back the big entrances.

April: Extreme Rules/Draft. This is where it gets tricky, either continue the Extreme Rules PPV, but get rid of either the TLC or the Hell in a Cell PPV, in order to have more variety of matches to choose from. Or make the Draft a PPV instead of a longer episode of RAW. Championship matches would be RAW vs SD, and since the Draft is already as long as a PPV it would kind of make sense.

May: Over the Limit/Night of Champions. The Night of Champions speaks for itself, and since I have no clue how Over the Limit is going to be I'm leaving it there.

June: Fatal Four Way. I'm supposing this would feature 3 number one contenders, and since that's a good way to give exposure, experience and chances to the future main eventers I'm leaving it there.

July: MITB/Night of Champions. If they go for Over the Limit in May, Night of Champions goes here, if not then it's MITB. I'm not sure what to expect from a MITB PPV, but I guess 2 guys get a chance for a championship shot, one in SD and one in RAW.

August: Summerslam. Same as the Rumble and WM. It's kind of a tradition and one of the longest running PPVs; and since it's just regular wrestling matches it works great.

September: Breaking Point. I don't know why the WWE got rid of this PPV, since it was a good concept. All, and I do mean all, matches are submission matches. It's good to see something like that every once in a while.

October: Bragging Rights/Hell in a Cell. If they go with Bragging Rights, just make sure to build it up good/long enough.

November: Elimination Chamber. I think it makes more sense here than in February, since there aren't any big PPVs shadowing this one at this time of the year. It could become one of WWE's biggest PPVs of the year.

December: TLC/Regular PPV. By "regular" I mean a PPV with normal wrestling matches, which could fit in well between two gimmick PPVs ( Elimination Chamber and the Rumble).

NXT

WWE's newest show. While many people don't like it, I myself  do. The main flaws I see are the Pro's poll and the challenges.

The Pro's poll should be changed to a people's poll. Every week you could vote for a rookies on wwe.com and whomever gets the most votes is number one and so on. And it could allow them to actually show how everybody did.

The challenges are kind of two sided, while some might be good to see the rookie's skills that we otherwise might not be able to see (talk the talk competition) others don't make much sense and just take up time from the show (keg carrying). We can see the guys physical abilities in the matches, so use the challenges exclusively for things we can't see on the matches (building the personas, mic skills, etc.) and do a challenge every two weeks, not every week.

Divas

Unify the championships, period. It may have seemed as a good idea to have two championships when the Divas championship was created, but now there aren't enough female wrestlers to keep the competition for both titles interesting.

Tag Teams

Stop putting two random guys together for no reason at all, and start having true Tag Teams.

Right now there are only two real Tag Teams: The Hart Dynasty and The Dudebusters. the WWE may add some Tag Teams from FCW, NXT (doubt it, but who knows) or by creating stables. This would mean one thing: competition, and that's what the Tag Team division needs.

In the Attitude Era the TT division was one of the pillars because of the Tag Teams (Hardys, Dudleys, E&C, etc.) and the innovation in the matches (they created the TLC matches), now the division is kind of in a stale state. This could be solved by adding Tag Teams and bringing back some truly entertaining matches, the ones where you have no clue what's going to happen, like the Texas Tornado matches or something like that.

Other

Here are some things that I didn't know where else to put.

Gimmicks:  Differentiate them. In the Main Event there are some gimmicks, by which it can be easily determined if a guy is a face or a heel, but in the lower ranks it really hard to distinguish them.

Entrances: I'm OK with having "boring" entrances in RAW or SD, but in the PPVs and specially in Wrestlemania the guys in the world championship matches should have some kind of a big entrance.

Feuds/Championship reigns: Make them a bit longer. I'm not saying someone should be champion for a year, but if you want to raise future stars, give them at least a 3 month run. And have them have meaningful wins (vs a main eventer or a big star). The feuds should also be longer, specially the secondary title feuds, so that the wrestlers can beneficiate from them.

Secondary titles: Make them meaningful. They are supposed to be the last step before becoming a world champion, so don't use them as if they had absolutely no meaning. Defend them more often and in PPV. Does anyone remember when was the last time the IC or US championship was defended on PPV? because I'm sure it wasn't this year, and we're already in May.

Promos: Use them to build up storylines long time, not just for the matches on the show. And more importantly have people with mic skills do them.

Managers: This is related to the previous. If a guy has bad/no mic skills, have them use a manager before they do promos on their own. I don't know why there aren't any managers now, but some guys wold look a lot better if they had one.

Announcers: Bring back Joey Styles. He's doing a great job as the Director of Digital Media Content, WWE.com, but he is, at least from my point of view, one of the best announcers ever, and since Jim Ross coming back doesn't seem likely, is there a better replacement?

Main Events: The titles is supposed to be the most important thing, so it should be defended in the main event in the PPVs. I can understand that n a gimmick PPV like Elimination Chamber there is one match at the beginning of it and one as the Main Event, since two in a row could be a bit overwhelming, but in the rest of the PPVs, with the exception of the Royal Rumble, a world title match should be the main event, or both of them in a row, but at least one.

Newcomers: I'm referring to the guys who go from FCW to the top brands or are signed to the top brands immediately. Build them up right, don't have them win a world championship before they are established. Have them feud with mid carders and one or more main eventers before giving them a shot at a world title or have them being US or IC champions for some time.

I think that was all. If you're interested here are the previous parts of this series:
