LeBron James: I Could Win The Scoring Title Every Year
Comments made by LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers are drawing media attention across the country.
Brian Windhorst, Cavaliers beat writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, posted a story early Friday in which he noted Jamesโ razor-thin lead in the NBA scoring race. He and Oklahomaโs Kevin Durant are separated by just one-tenth of a point (29.8 to 29.7 ppg) with just three weeks remaining in the regular season.
James was unconcerned, wrote Windhorst. โIf it happens, it happens,โ said James of a second consecutive scoring title. โIt is not important to me at all.โ
โOur team is trying to clinch [home court advantage] for the whole playoffs,โ he said, โand [that] is more important.โ
Then he added a sure eyebrow-raiser.
โIf I really wanted to, if I really wanted to win the scoring title, I could win it every single year,โ he said. โEvery single year, I could really do it. But it doesnโt matter to me.โ
In a league loaded with deadly scorersโDurant, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, and Carmelo Anthony, to name a fewโis Jamesโ confidence merited? Or is it misplaced?
Considering that James is sixth in the league in assists, at 8.5 per game, itโs clear that sharing the ball and involving his teammates is an essential part of his game. Combine that with the fact that he is shooting better than 50 percent from the field this season, and you could make a compelling case that James could, indeed, score far more points if he chose to.
However, he made it clear in his statement that what matters to him most is clinching home court advantage for the playoffsโin other words, the team goal, not an individual one.
Still, Jamesโ comments were picked up by sites across the Internet, including ESPN.com, Fanhouse.com, and more.
The Cavaliers' schedule over the last 10 games includes seven matchups with teams that would be in the playoffs if the postseason began today. Jamesโ matter-of-fact comments about the scoring race notwithstanding, thatโs clearly where his focus, and that of his teammates, should remain as the season draws to a close.
