Jerome Harrison: Not a Feature Back? | NFL Fantasy Rankings

Sean E. DouglasFeb 26, 2010

After a mind-blowing performance at the end of the fantasy football season, the collective thought in Cleveland Browns' management is that Jerome Harrison isn't fit to be a feature back.

Seeing that Harrison provided more offense in one month than the team had produced in the past two seasons, it's hard to see them not giving him the football.  However, I must agree with president Mike Holmgren and GM Tom Heckert that it will be a challenging effort for a running back of Harrison's size (5'9,'' 205 pounds) to hold up on his own.

Last year, Harrison ran the football only 194 times and his previous high before that was 34 carries in his four year career.  Now, at 27 years old, Harrison is certainly in the prime of his rushing career and doesn't have much wear and tear.

Still it's good to know that the Browns are up front about the fact that Harrison will be in some kind of committee this up coming season.  From a fantasy perspective, all I ever ask is that teams be honest if they think a guy isn't able to be the main runner on the team.

At least with this information, fantasy owners can adjust this players value before they get burned on draft day.

2010 Fantasy Draft Projection

Somewhere down the line, the Browns will commit to using a fellow running back in a committee with Harrison.  Now, the question is if Harrison will be the main runner in this committee or will someone else.

I suspect Harrison will probably be the easy favorite for the majority of carries in Cleveland this year. If the team drafts a rookie, or they use one their young current runners, Harrison has earned more minutes than those players.

It would take the team getting some high profile name in free agency (LT, Westbrook) before they would move Harrison out of the starting lineup.

Assuming Harrison keeps his starting job he should still make for a decent flex play option for your fantasy roster.  A flex play is about as much as I care to trust Cleveland and coach Eric Mangini, for that matter.  At the same time, Harrison does have the best offensive lineman in football (LT, Joe Thomas), and I'm sure Mangini will upgrade the o-line this offseason.

Look for Harrison as a nice starter as your flex play to start the 2010 fantasy football season.
