Portsmouth Goes into Administration: What This Means To the Premier League
After several tumultuous months in which they went through countless owners and an ever-increasing debt, Portsmouth has become the first Premier League club in the league's 18-year history go into administration now that they have failed to reach a deadline to get a new owner.
For Portsmouth, this has been one depressing time. They have gone from a side that was able to make the UEFA Cup Group Stage and winning the FA Cup in 2008 to completely falling apart.
Since they won the FA Cup, Portsmouth has lost Jermaine Defoe, Peter Crouch, Glenn Johnson, Sol Campbell and Niko Krancjar, among other players, and have lost manager Harry Redknapp to Tottenham.

For Pompey, this season has already been one to forget. Portsmouth only had 16 points before going into administration, and now that is seven points due to administration, which means that Portsmouth will be relegated this season.
Now one must look at the Premier League during this and question the financial health of the most popular football league in the world.
For starters, this shows that administration could happen to a Premier League club, but Portsmouth already had their problems with a revolving door of owners and the failure of the club to pay players' wages.
Also, this shows people that a club such as Portsmouth, who finished seventh in the Premier League in the 2007-2008 season, can have a fall like this. It should be an even bigger warning for Manchester United and Liverpool with their financial problems.
This entire event also shows us that the rising debt in the Premier League is a major issue that must be tackled by the FA. Hopefully something can be done to prevent this from happening again.
Portsmouth's issues also show us that foreign ownership and the failure of the "Fit and Proper Persons Test" with Pompey are issues that could really harm the Premier League in the long run.
Foreign owners should be evaluated even closer with Portsmouth now in administration in order to prevent another fiasco such as this one from happening again.
Moving forward, it appears that Portsmouth will get yet another owner. They know that as this situation has continued to worsen, at least they have been able to keep their fans excited despite the turmoil. Portsmouth is now looking to have some more FA Cup glory now that they are in the quarterfinals.
Maybe now Pompey will do something remarkable with their season despite the fact that they will be going into the Championship next season or win the FA Cup.
