2010 Winter Olympics:"Mad" Mike Milbury Wants To Be The Next Don Cherry

Bob WarjaFeb 25, 2010

Canada hockey fans know Don Cherry very well. His outspoken remarks on "Hockey Night in Canada," sometimes show how opinions can go over the line.

But the man knows his hockey. Meanwhile, over here in the States, NBC has a guy by the name of Mike Milbury who seems to spew garbage just for the sake of stirring up controversy, while lacking Cherry's knowledge of the game.

The latest brewha occurred during Wednesday night's Canada -Russia postgame when he used the term "Eurotrash" to describe the Russian game.

First of all, Milbury is an idiot. Second, who cares? I mean, he was right, for one thing. And for another, are we really so sensitive that this becomes a term that can't be used on television any longer?

What's next, censoring the halftime show at the Super Bowl? Oh, wait, never mind.

All this outrageous political correctness aside, it is not the first time that Milbury has gone for the obvious shock value.

According to Yahoo Sports, "Sometimes he's found using shoes in various ways ; or inciting Washington Capitals fans by calling them the "Crapitals" ; or mixing it up with bloggers outside of an elevator ."

But if those things were mixed in with the occasional intellegent remark about hockey, he might get a pass, even in this overly PC world. But his insight is limited, his analysis too obvious.

Sure, some consider Cherry a bigot and sometimes he says things without the facts, such as when he said only players in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League did drugs, though he offered no evidence.

But he is respected for his knowledge of the game. That's more than we can say for Milbury.

At the same time, what he said was not wrong, and he should not be punished for it.

All this censoring and sensitivity has gone too far, in my opinion. We are becoming a world where opinions can't be spoken unless they are facts. We are a litigious society and as such, everyone seems more concerned with who will sue them than with good television.

Meanwhile, it seems kind of ironic that the brand of hockey Milbury accuses the Russians of playing, while accurate, is the same way he once played.

Now I understand that this is the Olympics, and so announcers must be held up to a higher standard. And I'm sure Milbury could have explained his point without using that specific term.

But if that's the case, then it should be applied consistently. I wonder if a Russian announcer had something similar about the Americans if there would be any uproar?

I doubt it.

In closing, I hope that I didn't offend anyone with this article. I sincerely apologize if I used any inappropriate remarks, or made any unintentional generalizations.

Not.
