A Look Ahead At Weekend Boxing: It's Your Weekend To Shine, Shawn Porter
After a hot start to 2010, this weekend of boxing may be a little bit of a let down.
The string of exciting Friday Night Fights main events appears to be in jeopardy this week. For American fans there isn’t much on this weekend beside FNF and if you're lucky your local Fox Sports will be airing the Giovanni Segura title fight.
As far as TV fights overall goes, there is the FNF main event, the Segura fight, and Telemundo is airing the William Gonzalez-Jose Vazquez bantamweight scrap. That fight really doesn’t look to offer much and the card overall isn’t very impressive.
The FNF card isn’t very impressive either. Shawn Porter (12-0 10 KO) faces off against Russell Jordan (15-6 10 KO). Jordan seems to have some pop in his punches which could make it interesting but he has been knocked out in five of his six losses.
He has been knocked out in four of his last seven as well. Jordan appears to just be number 13 for Porter and nothing else. Outside of watching Porter just because he is a prospect, this card offers nothing at all.
The best fight/card of the weekend are one in the same. The Giovanni Segura (22-1-1 18 KO) fight is the best of the weekend for two reasons. Segura is very fun to watch and it is for the WBA Light Flyweight Title. His opponent Walter Tello (14-3 6 KO) shouldn’t be much of a test but Segura is a pure power puncher who wants to KO someone.
The supporting fight to this one is the return of Urbano Antillon (26-1 19 KO). He is going up against Luis Antonio Arceo (22-9-2 15 KO) who according to boxrec.com has a fight the day before. Hopefully he dropped that fight.
Two other cards of interest are taking place this weekend. The first takes place in Mexico and it has two interesting fights in Daniel Ponce De Leon (37-2 31 KO) against Orlando Cruz (16-1 7 KO) at featherweight and Lucas Martin Matthysse (25-0 23 KO) against Vivian Harris (29-3-1 19 KO) at junior welterweight.
The De Leon fight should be interesting from a boxer-puncher perspective. The Harris fight is a huge step up for Matthysse and a great chance for Harris to get his career back on track.
The other is a card featuring Elio Rojas (21-1 13 KO)defending his WBC featherweight championship against Guty Espadas Jr. (45-7 28 KO). Again another title that is interesting because it features a major belt on the line.
So there is the weekend ahead for most American fans. It doesn’t look pretty but who knows maybe we will get a surprise this weekend and the string of strong weekends will continue.
