Dustin Johnson: Tailor Made For The Masters
Couldn't help but notice last April when this tall, gangly guy got up on the 18th tee at Augusta National and ripped his drive over the towering pines on the right, drove his ball up far onto the upslope and hit a sand wedge into the green during the Masters.
Thought that was pretty impressive.
The guy was Dustin Johnson, now a two-time, back-to-back winner at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Best young player on tour?
Johnson has to be the guy.
He'll turn 26 after the U.S. Open, which will be back at Pebble in June.
But don't count this kid out when they play in April. His game appears tailor-made for Augusta National.
Fact is, Johnson has done what not too many players have done in the history of the PGA Tour. He's won a tournament in each of his first three full years on tour. Jack Nicklaus did it, so did Arnie, Gary Player, and a guy named Tiger.
Fairly elite company.
He's racked up the money too. Made just under $1.8 million in 2008, nearly $3 million ($2,977,901) last year and already $1,682,450 for this young season.
His final hole last Sunday was impressive. Knew what he had to do. Ripped a drive, cut a three-iron into the front bunker then a quick up-and-down for birdie, check please.
It's never too early to think about Augusta.
Forget Tiger Woods.
I like this kid Johnson.
