NFL: 2010 Draft And Offseason Will Be Momentous

sam greeneFeb 15, 2010

In terms of importance, this NFL offseason is off the charts. With an uncapped year coming up, a completely unreasonable lockout in sight, and a gap in competitiveness the size of which this league has never seen, this is the crossroads for Roger Goodell and the NFL.

Bottom-feeding teams like the Rams, Lions, Chiefs, and Redskins will be looking to stock up as much firepower as fiscally possible, and with the type of talent available this year, they have limitless possibilities. They could trade their high picks to teams looking to fill that one last spot for multiple players and picks.

With the type of players available this year though, would that be the best move?

At the top of the draft boards, Ndamukong Suh has the potential to be the second coming of Warren Sapp, McCoy is just a step behind Suh, Eric Berry has been compared to a young Ed Reed, and Russell Okung would be a great addition to protect a franchise's quarterback for years to come.

After these players there are a lot of unanswered questions-especially at the quarterback position.

Can Tebow adjust to the NFL game?

Will Bradford's shoulder issues destroy his career much the way of Chad Pennington?

Is Jimmy Clausen the next Brady Quinn?

Is Colt ready for the NFL?

For me, this quarterback class could very well rival the class of 2004 (Manning, Rivers, Roethlisberger). From the aforementioned players to sleepers like Pike, LeFevour, Robinson, and Jevan Snead, there could very well be a few perennial pro-bowlers in the mix. There's just too much depth for them all to fail.

The big question is: where will they go?

The team around the quarterback is often more important than the quarterback himself. Ask Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Philip Rivers, Mark Sanchez, and Eli Manning.

The one thing about this draft that really intrigues me is the depth on both lines. It will be interesting to see where teams' interests lie in the ever-changing landscape of spread offenses in the NFL, as to whether they look to add depth to the receiving corps with a Golden Tate-type or to the offensive tackle, which features 6 predicted first-rounders.

Whether GMs will be looking for nickel and dime backs like Kyle Wilson or pure pass rushers like Jason Pierre-Paul.

Could be a place to look back on as the NFL adapts, using less run setting up the pass, but rather short passes setting up to pass.
