Top 10 Heavyweights in MMA Today

Joshua BoykenFeb 14, 2010

The top 10 Heavyweights can get extremely controversial. You have so many great heavyweight in MMA today that it is very difficult to rank them from 10 to one. This list will attempt to be as accurate as possible.

10. Bobby Lashley 5-0

I'm being very courteous to the ex-WWE superstar. He has not proved himself besides his win over the out of shape Wes Sims. He also defeated Bob Sapp with no problem, but who really cares about someone defeating Bob Sapp? Like I said, I'm being very nice with this choice. I don't believe he could defeat Fedor, Alistair, or Brett in the Strikeforce. He should really thank me for this, because Gabriel Gonzaga and Brett Rodgers were also up for this 10 spot.

9. Junior Dos Santos 10-1

I have read a lot of top 10 heavyweights in MMA. Junior was either really high on them or not on them at all. I completely disagree; Junior is a perfect eight or nine spot. He has done enough to be mentioned, but has not done enough to be considered top five. Junior has Gabriel Gonzaga on the first Versus card of the UFC. I have Junior putting Gabe to sleep in a very good fight.

8. Alistair Overeem 32-11 1NC

Everybody complains about him getting eight; they claim he is top three material. I gave him eight for beating Vitor, Gary, and James. He is also the Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion. If he would step up and fight Brett, Bobby, or Fedor he would be higher than eight, but since he does not defend the title, I'm thinking about removing him from my list altogether.

7. Josh Barnett 24-5

Could very well be in the top five, if he would'nt have taken steroids. He would have stepped up and fought the unbeatable Fedor, but he got caught for taking those dreadful steroids. Josh has defeated some very tough opponents like Gilbert Yvel, Jeff Monson, Pedro Rizzo, and he also beat Nogueria in a split decision.

6. Shane Carwin 11-0

He has not proven himself, either. The only thing anybody knows him by is his amazing comeback knockout over Gabriel Gonzaga. I would easily put him in the top five if he was more active and fought stiffer competition.

5. Cani Velezquez 7-0

He has not destructed his opponents like Shane, but he has beat better opponents. He showed his great heart to defeat Cheick Kongo. He more recently dominated Ben Rothwell, in a fight that I thought we would lose. I adored the Shane Carwin and Cain Velezquez fight, but it never occurred. I think both of these fighters still have a lot to prove, and they both will soon get the chance. Cain will be fighting Big Nog in the next UFC PPV.

4. Antonio Nogueria 32-5-1 1NC

The most dangerous of all Heavyweights when he is off his back. He performed beautiful jiu-jitsu and sweeps against the legendary Randy Couture. Big Nog is one man in this division that has absolutely proven himself. He has fought a who's who, and is still fighting and contesting the best in the sport. A win over Cain could get him the next title shot.

3. Frank Mir 13-4

He took a brutal beating at the hands of Brock Lesnar, but shot back with a bigger build and stronger hands. I had never seen Frank look so good. I am a Frank fan, but I sincerely believe him and Lesnar would be one freaky match. This fight will most likely occur if he can get past the monstrous Shane Carwin at UFC 111.

2. Brock Lesnar 4-1

The obvious No. 2 pick, with key wins over Randy Couture, Frank Mir, and Heath Herring. He has fought good competition since entering the UFC and losing to Frank by knee bar. He shot back with three straight victories. In those three, victories he defeated a hall of famer, he became a champion, and he avenged his only loss. An obvious pick for No. 1 or 2. After a serious illness that cost him several possible fights, he can now only wait for the winner of Big Nog and Cain and then Mir and Carwin. All very intriguing matchups.

1. Fedor Emilienenko 31-1 1NC

The baddest of the bad. He can take a brutal beating and have his head on just enough to go for a armbar or knock you out. He has beat nearly any great fighter you can think of. I pray everyday he would make his UFC debut; a fight between him and Brock, Frank, or even another one with Big Nog would make me smile. Fedor, in my opinion, is an obvious No. 1 in the Heavyweight division. Fedor is rumoured to battle Strikeforce and former UFC contender Fabricio Werdum.

Honorable mentions : Gabriel Gonzaga, Todd Duffee, Brett Rodgers, and Fabricio Werdum
