Why Rick Pitino Going to St. Johns Makes Sense

Andrew JordanFeb 12, 2010

On Feb. 8 it was reported by various news networks that Louisville coach Rick Pitino was going to leave the University of Louisville and head to East Rutherford, New Jersey to become the new head coach of the abysmal New Jersey Nets, who had a 4-46 record at the time.

On Feb. 11 Pitino refuted these rumors, stating that he will stay at Louisville to remain the coach and help Louisville get back into the NCAA tournament, where they reached the Elite Eight last year.

But now after a 19-point loss to St. Johns at Madison Square Garden, Louisville's NCAA chances of reaching the tournament for the fourth consecutive year are now in real jeopardy, and Pitino's time at Louisville could be over.

After the extortion attempt last summer from an affair with a woman from several years ago, Pitino's time with Louisville is over.

But now might be the perfect time for Pitino to return to New York but not for the struggling NBA franchise in the Nets.

It's time for Pitino to go to the team that beat him last night: St. Johns University.

For the last 10 years, St. Johns have been a shell of their former selves and need to have a high profile coach replace Norm Roberts, who has been nothing short of an terrible bust of a hiring for St. Johns.

They are a college basketball team that used to be one of the premier college basketball team's in the entire nation back in the 1980s and 1990s, but they need to have a new head coach in order to return to return to national prominence.

Pitino has spent time as an assistant and head coach of the Knicks from 1983-1985 and 1987-1989 respectively, and he would be able to be a coach that could recruit the inner city stars that leave New York to play at elite programs elsewhere.

The New York media would love to have a person such as Pitino who was born and raised in the New York City area to be their coach, and overall if Pitino decided to join St. Johns, it would be great for everybody involved.
