Jacksonville Jaguars: Steer Clear Of Los Angeles

Michael FitzpatrickFeb 11, 2010

Despite four attempts by three NFL football teams, Los Angeles has been unable to hold down an NFL franchise.

Apparently, the NFL is the most popular sport in every other area of the country, aside from Los Angeles.

Attend a Dodger game and you’ll see a crowd that shows up during the third inning and hightails it out of the joint before the eighth, no matter what the score.

USC football was virtually a non-existent part of the Los Angeles sports scene until just recently.

The Northern Trust Open drew a crowd of 40,000…OVER THE ENTIRE WEEK.

Many PGA Tour events draw a larger crowd over two days. Now Riviera Country Club is talking about hosting a US Open?  Don’t you need golf fans for that?

All of this has gotten me thinking about whether or not Los Angeles is simply not a sports town.

Has that ship already sailed?

Has that curtain already closed?

The current sports landscape in Los Angeles certainly wasn’t what Water O’Malley envisioned when he moved his Dodgers there in 1957.

And if I were Wayne Weaver, I’d seriously think about drafting Tim Tebow to sell some tickets and jerseys in order to avoid moving the Jaguars to Los Angeles, only to have to move them again in less than a decade.

An NFL team in Los Angeles?

Haven't we seen that film before?

We all know that attendance is horrendous in Jacksonville, but things might not get much better in Los Angeles.

Sure, the Lakers draw large crowds these days, but isn’t the Staples Center just a meeting place for movie stars and paparazzi?

If you’re not in some way involved in the entertainment industry, aren’t you turned away at the door of the Staples Center by a large bouncer?

Now, Los Angeles is fun town; the beaches are beautiful; and the weather is even better.

But a sports city?

The Jaguars would probably draw a larger crowd in Fargo, ND.

Los Angeles is commonly referred to as the City of Angels.

But trust me, there will be no guardian sports angels there to look over the Jaguars if they do indeed decide to move to Los Angeles.

And there might not be any fans there either.
