May Kansas City Chief and New England Patriot Fans Have Deja Vu This Offseason?

Ron TepperFeb 4, 2010

When I was growing up there was a comedy on TV called "All In The Family".  Its funny, now years later, there have been so many reruns of past episodes on TV, that I've seen them all.

When it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots, the upcoming Free Agency period may produce a new episode, unfinished buisness so to speak, with one of the most interesting episodes of all. Call it Deja Vu.

I can bore you with all the coaching changes made recently, with ties between these two teams looming everywhere.

We all know what happened last year. The New England Patriots made Matt Cassel their Franchise player, then traded him to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick in 2009. The Patriots could hardly afford paying Cassel $15 Million to be their backup, but needed him for insurance in case Tom Brady had any problems returning from injury.

This year New England and Kansas City may repeat the act, except this time with 29- year old Nose Tackle, Vince Wilfolk.

Kansas City has a huge need at Nose Tackle. New England thought they could sign Wilfolk but all talks have stalled. Wilfolk is the reason that the Patriots traded Richard Seymour to Oakland. It gives them additional cap space. If they don't sign him, he'll likely get the Franchise Tag.

That tag would pay him $7 Million, which he said is a "slap on the face". He wants more money and a longer deal (who doesn't). Asante Samuel is trying to convince Wilfolk to force a trade, much like he did a few years back.

Will history repeat itself with the Pats franchising Wilfolk, then trading him to Kansas City for their 2nd Round pick? If history has taught us anything it would seem not only logical, but likely.

Wilfolk does have issues. One is evident in the above photo. Another is questionable work ethic, as he was not as dominant last year then in past years. That does not mean, however, that he can't be everything Kansas City could hope for. I'd personally like to see it happen.

Another point regards what kind of deal Wilfolk is looking for. If he wants Albert Haynesworth money, that could be a problem, but the Chiefs will shell out big bucks if its someone Pioli wants bad enough.

Wilfolk was drafted by Pioli and handpicked by Romeo Crennel in 2003 when he was chosen in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. He has been the key Cog to that Patriot defense during their Super Bowl years.

Another development could be the Chiefs going after Tully Banta Cain, another unrestricted Patriot Free Agent. The Chiefs need a pass rusher opposite Hali and Cain came into his own last season with 10 Quarterback Sacks in only 10 games played. He is also 29 years old and will soon turn 30.

How about OG Stephen Neal? he could provide the Chiefs with an immediate 1 year "fix" for the Chiefs. Despite his age, he is still playing at a high level and is Pioli's poster boy for everything he believes in. He is a born leader and respected warrior.

Even Ben Watson. Maybe he hasn't lived up to his 1st round expectations, but he knows the Offense and he would be an immediate starter. Yes, when It comes to Free Agency, Pioli may not have to look any further than his old back yard.

Of course there is no crystal ball here, but it makes perfect sense to me. The Chiefs have told their fans for years that they "have a plan" but hardly make that statement palpable to the public. What we do know is that both teams still seem connected like family.

A family that plays together stays together. Kansas City and New England give that an ironic, even esoteric meaning that only they can understand.
