Will NXT Succeed Where ECW Failed?
For those who happened to tune in to the latest edition of ECW, Vince McMahon announced there would be major changes to the brand, prominently a new name (NXT, short for next generation) a show that focuses entirely on fresh talent and will showcase less or possibly no veteran talent.
This is obviously a response to ECW's frequent inadequate ratings and raises a lot of questions concerning the future of the brand.
Those questions include:
"Has the WWE touched down on a successful business plan?"
"Will NXT succeed were ECW failed?"
"Will a show comprising entirely of new talent be worth watching?"
Positives
1. The creative division is likely to use the initial curiosity in fans to showcase the best of NXT in the first week and show the WWE Universe that this will be a great show to tune into. Even if they fail at living up to the new expectations of fans they will receive some sort of short-term publicity, but hopefully this is not the case, with only success being in the future.
2. The anticipated debuts and re-debuts of Kaval, Brian Danielson, Joe Hennig, Justin Angel, Lance Cade, and Curt Hawkins (at least i'm excited about them coming back) are likely to occur sometime of over the first few weeks of NXT. These are all very talented men that the company will greatly benefit from in the near future.
Negatives
1. For starters, I think we can all agree that the WWE has failed on the name. Seriously is NXT (next generation) the best your entire creative team can come up with?
Not only is it a corny name, a Scottish wrestling promotion already operates as NXT wrestling, which really doesn't surprise me.
2. If this show is to feature nothing but new talent, does it mean that future supplemental Drafts will only occur between Smackdown and RAW? I always look forward to seeing top-level ECW talent receive their first taste of the big leagues and allow misused and underrated veterans to rebuild their careers on ECW. But if the show is formatted according to the recent announcement, these things are unlikely to happen again.
3. Without more developed superstars to participate in the clash for the NXT championship, how can it's 'fresh' title holders hope to be built up as legitimate champions?
Does this also mean that the NXT championship will automatically become the lowest ranking in WWE?
4. If all new talent is to debut on NXT, then will we ever see those historic events where a new wrestler, out of the blue, debuts and bests a main eventer? I can't think of any such occurrences of the top of my head, but I'm sure it has happened before and would be missed in the new era.
In the end it's up to the fans to decide whether the new show is a success. For now we can only wait and hope that the creative division lives up to the new expectations.
Sorry if I've missed out on any obvious positives/negatives, and despite having more negatives than positives, I do favour the idea of NXT.
