USC Football: Which Recruits Remain on Trojans' Table?
Come Wednesday, National SHOPPING Day will be a case of feast or famine for a lot of schools. For Florida and Texas, it looks to be a feast, as the fat get even fatter.
For others like Cincinnati, which lost its head coach Brian Kelly to Notre Dame, it most likely figures to be a famine, as the Irish try to fatten up on former Bearcat recruits.
For the USC Trojans, it could have been a real famine after Pete Carroll and half of his staff resigned to join the Seattle Seahawks.
But Lane Kiffin and his recruiting coordinator, Ed Orgeron, moved over from the University of Tennessee and have vowed to continue the success of the Carroll era.
Kiffin and Orgeron, along with Kiffin’s father Monte, a heralded NFL defensive coordinator, have managed to stem the tide of defections and keep most of the recruits who had previously committed to Pete Carroll and his staff.
But whether the Trojans will enjoy another Top 10 feast on National SHOPPING Day depends on how many uncommitted recruits decide to sit at the Trojans' table.
So what kind of delicacies are Lane Kiffin and Company hoping to cook up? Here’s a look at the remaining items on their shopping list.
Seantrel Henderson, the 6'7", 295-pound offensive tackle from Minnesota tops the list. According to ESPN.com/Scout, Henderson appears to be in the Ohio State camp. Lane Kiffin and Orgeron are making a concerted push for Henderson, as is Miami, where he visited this past weekend, but ESPN projects Henderson as a Buckeye. However, USC fans are hoping he will say, “Goodbye, Columbus.”
Demar Dorsey, the No. 2-ranked safety from Fort Lauderdale, Florida would be a great steal for the Trojans. But the 6'1", 180-pound Dorsey is very high on the list of Jimbo Fisher and Florida State. ESPN feels very confident that Dorsey will be a Seminole.
Markeith Ambles, a four-star, 6'1", 185-pound wide receiver from Henry County High School in Georgia was formerly committed to Lane Kiffin at Tennessee. When Kiffin and Company left, Ambles decommitted and took an official visit to USC. ESPN is fairly confident that he will commit to USC, but some reports say that Ambles has switched his allegiance back to UT and is also checking out North Carolina.
Christian Jones, the 6'4", 215-pound linebacker from Lake Howell, Florida has family ties to the Seminoles but might look to the Gators, as well. More than likely he will choose one of those Florida schools. Nevertheless, USC would definitely welcome him with open arms.
Sean Parker, the No. 5-ranked safety from Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California has been considering Washington, Michigan, and USC. While Lane Kiffin has paid the 6'1", 186-pound safety a visit, ESPN feels fairly confident that Parker will choose to help bolster Rich Rodriguez’s sagging defense, as well as his popularity among Wolverine fans.
Chaz Green, the No. 4-ranked offensive tackle from Tampa Catholic High School, was courted by Lane Kiffin for UT. Now that Kiffin is at USC, he still has his focus set on the 6'5", 286-pound Green. But ESPN states with a fair amount of certainty that Urban Meyer’s Gators are the team to beat.
Dietrich Riley, the No. 10-ranked safety from Saint Francis High School in La Canada, California is the object of a tug of war between Lane Kiffin and Rick Neuheisel of UCLA. ESPN believes that when the dust clears the 6'1", 196-pound Riley will be a Bruin.
There are some other real solid undecided recruits who USC would like to have at the Trojans’ table, like Michael Thornton, a 6'1", 273-pound defensive tackle from Stephenson High School in Georgia, and Josh Shirley, a 6'3", 210-pound outside linebacker from Henry Kaiser High School in Fontana, California.
Thornton is likely to go to an SEC school, possibly Georgia, while Shirley is trying to decide between Miami and USC.
These are the main courses that are still on the menu. If Kiffin and Orgeron can cook up a couple of these delicacies for USC, the Trojans will have another Top 10 feast. There are some lesser names out there as well, which, if they commit, will be icing on the cake.
While this appears to be the latest on recruiting, one never knows. Some of these names and their selections could be old news by morning. But, more than likely, if a recruit has held out this long, I would imagine he would wait one more day to make his announcement on national television.
As far as the other big decision at USC, I believe it has been made. The defensive staff is pretty much set. But a few integral offensive slots, like offensive coordinator, remain open—at least publicly. However, privately (in my opinion) the decision has been made, and I expect an announcement shortly after National SHOPPING Day.
