Ben Simmons Plans to Make Minor Changes to Jump Shot in Offseason
Ben Simmons put up huge numbers in his rookie season, but the Philadelphia 76ers star struggled with an outside shot. Still, he isn't going to adjust his form too much in the offseason.
"Minor things," Simmons said Thursday about possible changes, per Derek Bodner of The Athletic. "But changing the whole shot, no."
The 21-year-old made zero three-point shots this season on 11 attempts.
Per Basketball Reference, 78.7 percent of his shots this season came from within 10 feet of the basket. Only 3.9 percent of looks came from beyond 16 feet.
This didn't limit Simmons as a rookie as he averaged 15.8 points, 8.2 assists and 8.1 rebounds per game this year. He is one of two favorites for the Rookie of the Year Award along with Donovan Mitchell of the Jazz.
It would help if the 6'10" point guard can make at least a few shots from the perimeter to keep defenders honest, but he seems like he can succeed without being an effective three-point shooter.
Considering Giannis Antetokounmpo has made just 28.4 percent of his shots from beyond the arc in his career and still averaged 26.9 PPG this season, it's clear you don't need to be Stephen Curry to succeed in this league.
Meanwhile, you have to be careful when adjusting your shooting form, as we saw with Markelle Fultz over the course of the season.
