Report: 'No Clear Answers' on If Kawhi Leonard Will Get Supermax Contract
The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly deciding whether to offer star forward Kawhi Leonard a five-year, $219 million "supermax" extension after he appeared in just nine games during the 2017-18 NBA season.
On Tuesday, Ramona Shelburne and Michael C. Wright of ESPN.com reported there are "no clear answers" about whether the Spurs will make the proposal and if Leonard would accept amid lingering tensions with the team.
The 26-year-old Los Angeles native missed most of the season, including the team's short playoff run, because of a lingering quad injury.
Head coach Gregg Popovich rarely shed light on the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year's progress or potential availability, instead telling reporters to ask the San Diego State product's "group."
"You'll have to ask Kawhi and his group that question," Popovich said April 15. "So far, they say that he's not ready to go, so we can't do anything until that happens…and then we would have to decide what's going on from there. But that's the first thing that has to happen."
Meanwhile, Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported last week that Leonard wants Pop to "lighten up a little with practice and tweak some things."
The Spurs may be forced to explore trade options with Leonard, who has one guaranteed year left on his deal and a player option for 2019-20, if an extension can't be reached.
He's the team's most valuable asset by a considerable margin, and it can't afford to lose him without getting future building blocks in return.
