La Liga Table 2018: Sunday's Week 35 Results and Updated Standings

Gill ClarkApr 29, 2018

Barcelona were crowned La Liga champions on Sunday, as they beat Deportivo La Coruna 4-2 in a thrilling game at the Riazor Stadium.

Manager Ernesto Valverde's side only needed a point to claim the title but took all three as they claimed the double, having won the Copa del Rey on April 21.

Lionel Messi was the star man, scoring a hat-trick to down Deportivo. The defeat means manager Clarence Seedorf's side are relegated from La Liga along with Las Palmas and Malaga.

Sunday Recap

Barcelona took just seven minutes to open the scoring, as Ousmane Dembele found Philippe Coutinho in the area, and he curled the ball past goalkeeper Ruben.

Deportivo thought they had equalised 10 minutes later after Lucas Perez slotted home from close range only to see the effort ruled out for offside.

Marca showed the decision:

Barcelona continued to probe and doubled their lead with a superb goal. Luis Suarez used the outside of his boot to cross for Messi, who volleyed home at the far post.

Opta showed how it was another landmark for the Argentina international:

Yet Deportivo hit straight back, as Borja Valle found Perez, and he fired past Marc-Andre ter Stegen to halve the visitors' lead.

Barcelona were coasting and were made to pay when Deportivo levelled it up just after the hour mark. Valle was again involved as he picked out Celso Borges, who laid it off to Emre Colak to tuck home.

The visitors were clearly rattled, with Deportivo intent on attacking and going for the win needed to keep their slim survival hopes alive.

However, once again this season Barcelona looked to Messi to produce some magic, and he did not disappoint. He combined brilliantly with Suarez to restore Barca's lead before completing his hat-trick three minutes later.

It's a deserved title win for Barcelona, who remain unbeaten in La Liga after 34 games. Valverde's side may not play with the style of some of the club's greatest teams, but their consistency and the brilliance of Messi have made them the best in the Spanish top flight.

Atletico Madrid made plenty of changes for their trip to Alaves, as they kept their stars fresh for Thursday's UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against Arsenal.

The two teams shared their lineups on Twitter:

The first half was a tight and physical affair, with the visitors a little fortunate not to concede a penalty after Lucas Hernandez appeared to push Munir El Haddadi.

The action heated up in the second half with Vitolo rattling the woodwork with a fierce effort and then winning a penalty on 71 minutes after Mubarak Wakaso fouled him.

Fernando Torres stepped up, but goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco saved his kick. However, seven minutes later, Atletico had a second spot-kick after Wakaso was penalised for handball. This time the responsibility fell to Kevin Gameiro, and he made no mistake to give Atletico the lead.

Atletico managed to see the game out but finished with 10 men after Angel Correa was sent off deep into stoppage time for dissent.

Opta showed how Atleti are masters of 1-0 wins in La Liga:

It's a good result for Atletico, who managed to rest key players but still take home all three points. Diego Costa also saw just over an hour of action and should be in good shape to feature against Arsenal.
