Bills GM Brandon Beane Says Buffalo Won't Pursue Dez Bryant Contract

Kyle NewportApr 28, 2018

As Dez Bryant looks for a new home, he probably shouldn't go house-hunting in Buffalo.

Per ESPN's Mike Rodak, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane says the team has looked at the three-time Pro Bowler "on tape" but that's about it: "If we thought that was the right fit for us, we definitely would potentially pursue it."

The Dallas Cowboys cut Bryant earlier this month. NFL Insider Ed Werder reported earlier this week that the receiver declined a multiyear offer the Baltimore Ravens because he is seeking a one-year deal that will allow him to hit the open market in 2019 and cash in.

Buffalo's receiving corps did not have an overly impressive 2017 campaign. Deonte Thompson—now a Cowboy—led all Buffalo receivers with 430 yards, and Andre Holmes' three receiving touchdowns led the team, as only one other wideout had multiple touchdowns.

To say the team could use a playmaker like Bryant on the outside would be an understatement. The 6'2", 225-pound wideout caught 69 passes for 838 yards and six touchdowns in his final season in Dallas last year. From 2012 to 2014, he recorded at least 1,200 yards and 12 scores in each season.

However, Beane apparently feels good about where his team is at.

The Bills' passing attack is going to look quite a bit different next season, with or without Bryant. The team signed veteran AJ McCarron to be the starting quarterback after trading Tyrod Taylor and also traded up to No. 7 in the 2018 NFL draft to draft former Wyoming star Josh Allen.

Not only that, but the receiving corps should be improved as well. Kelvin Benjamin will have his first full offseason with the team after coming over in a midseason trade last year, and veteran Jeremy Kerley was signed in free agency. The Bills also used their final two draft picks on wideouts, Clemson's Ray-Ray McCloud and North Carolina's Austin Proehl.

Buffalo apparently had at least some interest in the 29-year-old star, but not enough to pursue a deal at this time. Given the Cowboys are not on the Bills' schedule next season, other teams are likely higher on his list anyway.
