Knicks Rumors: Heat Assistant Juwan Howard to Interview for NY's HC Position
The New York Knicks' search for their next head coach added another name, as Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard is expected to meet with the team regarding the vacancy.
ESPN's Zach Lowe reported the meeting could happen "as soon as this weekend."
Howard, 45, has served as an assistant in Miami since his retirement from the NBA in 2013. He was a champion with the franchise in 2012 and 2013, where he was widely recognized as a calming voice in the locker room.
The Knicks are looking for a coach to replace Jeff Hornacek, who was fired earlier this month after two disappointing seasons. Hornacek went 60-104 during his tenure, including a 29-53 record in 2017-18.
Mike Woodson, who interviewed for his old job earlier this month, is the only Knicks coach hired this century to finish his tenure with a winning record. New York has not had a winning record since 2012-13 and has three winning records in the last 17 seasons.
The Knicks don't appear to have a favorite to replace Hornacek at this time. David Fizdale, Mark Jackson, Jerry Stackhouse, David Blatt, TNT analyst Kenny Smith and Woodson were among the previously known candidates.
Fizdale, Jackson, Woodson and Blatt have head-coaching experience at the NBA level. Stackhouse, Howard and Smith do not.
Whoever takes the job will have an uphill battle heading into next season with star Kristaps Porzingis recovering from a torn ACL. Knicks owner James Dolan told Larry Brooks of the New York Post that it's possible Porzingis misses the entire 2018-19 season.
