Jose Mourinho Reportedly Wants to Sell Anthony Martial Amid Juventus Rumours

Christopher SimpsonApr 25, 2018

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly open to selling Anthony Martial in order to fund the club's transfer business this summer amid rumours he is wanted by Juventus.

According to Tuttosport, Mourinho is ready to let the France international leave this summer and wants to use the sale to help improve the squad, as Michael Carrick and potentially Marouane Fellaini will need replacing (h/t Le 10 Sport, via Calciomercato.com).

Per Calciomercato, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked with the forward recently.

According to Bleacher Report's Dean Jones, Martial is ready to leave Old Trafford:

The 22-year-old has contributed 11 goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances this season but seems to have fallen out of favour under Mourinho, particularly since Alexis Sanchez's January arrival provided competition for him on the left.

After spending the Premier League matches against Swansea City and Manchester City on the bench, football writer Liam Canning hoped to see Martial in the first XI against West Bromwich Albion:

The Frenchman also started that game as a substitute, however, and he was unable to inspire United when he came on for the final half-hour of the drab 1-0 defeat.

He did start the league match away to Bournemouth on April 18 but was unused on Saturday when United beat Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final, though the fans were evidently hoping to see him in action, per Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News:

While he has not consistently shown his best form in a United shirt since his standout debut campaign in 2015/16, he has displayed an enormous amount of potential—the kind that could help the Red Devils become a potent force once again if he can fulfil it at Old Trafford.

As such, letting him leave would be a baffling decision. What's more, United would likely want more than the initial £36 million they paid to Monaco for him, something that could be a challenge for the Bianconeri.

It could be more achievable for PSG, but it's unclear whether they can afford another high-spending summer after acquiring Neymar in a world-record deal last year and making Kylian Mbappe's loan move permanent for £166 million at the end of the season.
