Lakers News: Julius Randle Focused on Future, Not LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard

Kyle NewportApr 20, 2018

While Los Angeles Lakers fans hope LeBron James and/or Kawhi Leonard (and Paul George) sign with the Purple and Gold in free agency this summer, Julius Randle has other things atop his priority list.

You know, like figuring out his next contract.

TMZ Sports recently caught up to Randle and asked him if he was hoping the Lakers could land a star or two this offseason. His answer? "I got to figure out my situation first."

The No. 7 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, Randle will be a restricted free agent this summer.

This past season was arguably the 23-year-old's best to date. He averaged career highs in scoring (16.1 points per game) and field-goal percentage (55.8 percent) while adding 8.0 rebounds per game. As a result, he has put himself in position to get a nice contract, whether it be in Los Angeles or elsewhere.

At this point, given there is no guarantee he will return next season, Randle would be silly to say he hoped the Lakers land stars this offseason. For all he knows, he could have to face a James-led Lakers squad next season.

Randle noted that even if he was under contract, "it's not [his] decision." The 6'9", 250-pound forward gets paid to play basketball, not make personnel moves. Those responsibilities fall on Magic Johnson and Co.

The Lakers have seen a steady improvement over the past three years and nabbed 35 wins this past season, their most since 2012-13. Adding an All-Star like James or Leonard would help Los Angeles' young core take the next step.

As for what the future holds for both him and the team, Randle is only willing to say, "We'll see."
