EPL Table: 2018 Week 34 Standings After Sunday's Premier League Scores

Gill ClarkApr 15, 2018

Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions without having to kick a single ball on Sunday, as Manchester United slipped to a surprise home defeat to bottom side West Bromwich Albion.

The result leaves manager Pep Guardiola's side 16 points clear and mathematically assured of the title with just five games left to play.

Earlier in the day, Newcastle United handed Arsenal a fifth consecutive Premier League away defeat. Matt Ritchie scored the winner in a 2-1 victory that takes them to 41 points and virtually guarantees their safety.

Sunday Recap

Manchester United found it tough going against West Brom at Old Trafford, although they may feel aggrieved not to have won a penalty in the first half.

Craig Dawson looked to have clipped Ander Herrera in the penalty area, but referee Paul Tierney was not convinced.

Goal's Kris Voakes felt it should have been given:

West Brom did threaten with David De Gea saving well from Jake Livermore, while United were subdued in attack with Paul Pogba booked for trying to handle the ball into the back of the net.

The Red Devils brought on Jesse Lingard for Herrera at half-time, and Anthony Martial followed on the hour mark for the ineffective Pogba.

Samuel Luckhurst at the Manchester Evening News said manager Jose Mourinho applauded the midfielder off the pitch:

United pressed and went close when Ben Foster saved well from Romelu Lukaku, but they were caught out on 73 minutes as Chris Brunt's corner was headed back across goal for Jay Rodriguez to nod home.

The Reds Devils piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser but lacked the invention to break down an organised and committed West Brom side.

Simon Peach at the Press Association showed how West Brom fans celebrated their win:

It's a really poor defeat for United, particularly after beating Manchester City just a week ago. Meanwhile, West Brom pick up just their fourth Premier League win of the season, although they remain nine points from safety.

Arsenal headed to Newcastle without a single point on their Premier League travels in 2018 but looked on course to end that unwanted record when they went ahead early on at St James' Park.

Manager Arsene Wenger paired strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette up front for the first time, and it paid off, as they combined for the opening goal on 14 minutes.

Shkodran Mustafi sprayed the ball out to Aubameyang on the left, and he crossed for a sliding Lacazette to fire home at the back post.

Goal's Chris Wheatley said it was evidence the pair can play together:

However, Newcastle hit back just before the half-hour mark, as Ayoze Perez nipped in front of Mustafi and converted DeAndre Yedlin's cross.

James Olley at the Evening Standard noted how it was a familiar failing from Mustafi:

It got even worse for Arsenal after the break, as Ritchie latched on to a flick from Perez and coolly fired past goalkeeper Petr Cech.

The hosts could have had a third, as Kenedy made a great run but saw his shot deflected onto the crossbar. Arsenal did press late on but could not find an equaliser as they suffered yet another away loss.

Dale Johnson at ESPN FC showed how it could be a damaging result for the Gunners:

In contrast, Newcastle have won their last four games in a row to pull away from the drop zone and could finish the season in the top half of the table.
