Robert Griffin III Says He Has 'Great Opportunity' to Learn from Joe Flacco

Rob GoldbergApr 11, 2018

Robert Griffin III projects to start the 2018 season as Joe Flacco's backup after signing with the Baltimore Ravens, and he believes this could serve as a learning opportunity.

"I really do look forward to getting in the quarterback room with him," Griffin said of Flacco Wednesday, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "It's a great opportunity for me. I still feel like I'm a young player. I'm 28, but feel like I'm 25. He’s been through a lot of things in his career. He's been to the pinnacle, won the Super Bowl, Super Bowl MVP. I think that’s a great opportunity to learn from him."

Griffin went unsigned last season, so he appears grateful to the Ravens for giving him an opportunity to remain in the NFL. He also struggled the last time he was on the field, producing a 72.5 rating in five starts with the Browns in 2016.

While he only had two touchdowns and three interceptions in that span, he is responsible for starting the only Cleveland win in the last two seasons.

He's a long way from his first season in 2012 when he won Rookie of the Year with the Redskins throwing 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions, adding 815 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground.

Even if the Ravens don't expect the dynamic player that was drafted No. 2 overall in 2012, he could still be an asset for a team that hasn't had a reliable backup quarterback since Tyrod Taylor.

Of course, he might not want to learn too much from Flacco considering the veteran's struggles in recent years. The 33-year-old struggled with consistency last season and only totaled 3,141 passing yards, the lowest of any full season since he was a rookie in 2008. His 46.0 Total QBR was the second lowest of his career.

Although Flacco is undoubtedly still the starter in Baltimore, Griffin could potentially challenge for playing time if he struggles early.
