Masters Results 2018: Final Leaderboard and Reaction to Patrick Reed's Win

Matt JonesApr 9, 2018

Patrick Reed etched his name into golfing history on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, as he held off a late charge from Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler to clinch the Masters title.

On a dramatic final day, Reed shot a one-under par final round of 71 to finish on 15-under for the tournament. He was eventually one shot clear of Fowler and two in front of 2015 champion Spieth, who conjured one of the all-time great Masters rounds (64) to thrust himself into third.

Given he's never been a unanimously popular player, Reed donning the green jacket prompted a varied and interesting response. Here's a look at some of the best reaction after the American's victory and a reminder of how things finished up in the first major of the year.

Reed Relishes Augusta Pressure

AUGUSTA, GA - APRIL 08: Patrick Reed (R) of the United States is congratulated by Sergio Garcia (L) of Spain after being presented the green jacket after winning the 2018 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 8, 2018 in Augusta, Georg

So many anticipated a battle between Rory McIlroy and Reed in the final pairing on Sunday. But in the end, the main charge for the overnight leader came from further down the pack.

Spieth, in particular, looked as though he was going to reel in his compatriot at one stage, as he produced one of the rounds of his life to get into contention.

The tournament's official Twitter account posted highlights from his eight-under par effort:

Mike Greenberg of ESPN said that while it wasn't enough to win, Spieth's 64 should be remembered for a long time:

"All in all it was a great day," said Spieth afterwards, per Ewan Murray of the Guardian. "I was nine back, going out I knew I needed significant help no matter how well I played."

In the end, a bogey at the last cost the three-time major champion a chance at another green jacket, leaving two men chasing their first major to battle it out.

Fowler applied the pressure late in his round, as he made a brilliant birdie at the last to move to within one of the leader. It eventually wasn't enough, though, leaving the 29-year-old in second spot; he's now finished as a runner-up in three of the four major events and third in the other.

Golf journalist Jason Sobel suggested the American can take some positives from this performance:

Reed was rock solid under the pressure, though, and whenever one of his rivals for the title moved into striking distance, he was able to respond.

On the back nine, he found a birdie at the 12th and then at the 14th, just when Spieth was really beginning to ramp up the pressure, Reed putted in from the edge of the green to move to 15-under for the tournament.

That nerve was needed right until the end, too, as Reed needed to avoid bogey at the last to prevent a playoff. In the end, he holed a putt from three foot for the biggest victory of his career.

Here's the moment he clinched it:

United States President Donald Trump congratulated the new Masters champion on social media, citing the progression he has made as of late:

Despite having attended Augusta State University, it was actually McIlroy who had the louder backing in the final pairing. Reed said afterwards that spurred him on, per Murray.

"I walked up to the first tee and had a really welcoming cheer from the fans but then when Rory walked up to the tee, his cheer was a little louder. But that's another thing that just kind of played into my hand. Not only did it fuel my fire a little bit, but also, it just takes the pressure off of me and adds it back to him."

Paul Hayward of the Daily Telegraph hailed the determination of the new champion:

Reed has showcased the talent needed to win one of the big events before, especially in the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in 2016, when he beat McIlroy in a brilliant battle.

Still, the Masters is a different kind of pressure, especially with so many elite players in pursuit. Reed's ability to hold it together, make clutch putts and bounce back from errors was impressive and indicative of a man capable of winning more major prizes in his career.
