Tiger Woods Congraulates Patrick Reed, Assures Him Presidents Cup Captain Pick

Rob GoldbergApr 8, 2018

Count Tiger Woods as one of the many people Patrick Reed's 2018 Masters win impressed. Not only did the 14-time major winner congratulate the 27-year-old on his victory Sunday, but he also promised him a spot in the 2019 Presidents Cup:

Woods and Ernie Els have agreed to be team captains for the American and international squads, respectively, in Melbourne, Australia, for the event that pits golfers from the United States against the best from the rest of the world, not including Europe.

Woods was an assistant captain in 2017 under Steve Stricker but will have final say over the lineup next summer.

Reed competed in the last two Presidents Cups, earning his way onto the team through FedEx Points each time. Team USA won both years, extending its winning streak to seven.

Although the 2019 event is still far away, Reed doesn't appear likely to need a captain's pick.

The 27-year-old earned his first career major win at the Masters, finishing 15 strokes under par. He tallied 22 birdies over the four rounds, plus two eagles. It was his sixth win on the PGA Tour, and he continues to establish himself as one of the sport's best young players.

He also moved to fifth in the FedEx Cup standings with the win, making him an asset for the United States squad in either the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup.

As for Woods, his first major appearance in two years was filled with ups and downs, but he finished tied for 32nd with a score of one over par. While he still has room to improve as he returns from his back injury, he was able to at least appreciate a great performance from Reed.
