Masters Prize Money 2018: Final Leaderboard, Total Purse and Payouts

Steve SilvermanApr 8, 2018

Patrick Reed has been waiting his turn, and perhaps not so patiently.

While seeing Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth earn championships in the biggest tournaments, Reed had never played his best golf in the biggest PGA Tour events.

That changed in the 2018 Masters, as he took charge with a powerful third round and then held off a slew of the game's best golfers in Sunday's final round at Augusta National to earn the green jacket.

Reed shot a one-under 71 in the final round and missed out on a chance to become the first golfer in the history of the event to record four sub-70 rounds.

However, the smile on Reed's face at the conclusion of the tournament told the story that did not matter to him in the least, as CBS Sports captured:

Reed shot a four-round total of 273, and that was one shot better than second-place finisher Rickie Fowler and two strokes better than Jordan Spieth. Here's a link to PGATour.com's Masters leaderboard.

Reed made a challenging two-putt par on the final hole to earn the title and hear the roar of the crowd.

"To have to par the last hole to win my first major, it definitely felt right," Reed said, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com).

Reed started the final round with a three-stroke lead over McIlroy, and it was expected that those two would engage in a match-play type of final round to decide who would win the green jacket.

However, both men started the round in less-than-stellar fashion, as Reed bogeyed two of the first six holes and McIlroy failed to charge through the opening. McIlroy birdied the second hole, but he played disappointing golf after that and did not make a serious run at the title.

If McIlroy had been able to take charge and win the Masters, it would have given him the career Grand Slam. That's something that McIlroy is going to have to wait to accomplish.

While Spieth was coming off two ordinary rounds on Friday and Saturday, he was in top form for the final 18 holes. He managed to charge up the leaderboard and tie Reed for a short while, but when Reed birdied the 14th hole, he regained his advantage.

Spieth ended the round with a 64 and would have been one stroke closer if his par putt on the 18th hole had not slipped by the edge of the cup.

Spieth was clearly proud of his final-round showing.

"I think I've proven to myself and to others that you never give up," Spieth said, per the AP. "I started the round nine shots back and I came out with the idea of just playing the golf course and having a lot of fun doing it and try to shoot a low round and finish the tournament strong and see what happens, if something crazy happens."

Fowler birdied the 18th hole, and that got him within one shot of Reed. It forced the eventual winner to come with a difficult two-putt on the 18th hole to clinch the championship.

The victory earned Reed an eye-catching $1,980,000 payday. Here's how the $11 million in prize money was distributed at the conclusion of the tournament, per GNN:
