Shaq Thompson Sued by Ex-Duke QB Anthony Boone over Car Crash

Mike ChiariApr 4, 2018

Former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone is seeking more than $25,000 in damages in a lawsuit against Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson stemming from a 2016 auto crash.

According to ESPN.com's David Newton and Bob Pockrass, a vehicle driven by Thompson collided head-on with the vehicle operated by Boone on May 22, 2016.

Thompson said he lost control while trying to retrieve his cellphone after it fell on the floor. Boone was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Boone is hoping to be reimbursed for injuries and lost wages, as he has not played football since suffering "a broken hip, damage to the tendons and ligaments in his hand and injuries to the ribs" in the incident, per Newton and Pockrass.

Boone was the Blue Devils' starting quarterback in both 2013 and 2014 before embarking on a professional career in the CFL.

He attempted 31 passes for the Montreal Alouettes in 2015 after getting cut by the NFL's Detroit Lions during the 2015 preseason.

Thompson is set to enter his fourth NFL season after the Panthers selected him with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft out of Washington.

He has appeared in 42 games and made 36 starts with the Panthers.

Last season, Thompson set career highs with 57 tackles and two sacks in 14 starts for a Carolina team that reached the playoffs.

The Panthers exercised the fifth-year option in Thompson's contract for 2019, meaning his salary will be the average salary of the third through 25th highest-paid linebackers in the league, according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.
