Stephen Jones: No Timeline on Dez Bryant Contract Discussions with Cowboys

Rob GoldbergMar 29, 2018

The Dallas Cowboys haven't yet decided what to do with receiver Dez Bryant going forward, and according to executive vice president Stephen Jones and owner Jerry Jones, there still isn't a timeline for any decision.

"We're going to sit down and we have a lot to talk about," Jerry Jones said of Bryant's future with the team, per Nick Eatman of the team's official site. "I don't want to say or not say anything to imply that Dez won’t be a Dallas Cowboy."

"We haven't put that timeline on it," Stephen Jones added. "When we get ready on a decision with Dez, we'll make it."

Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports recently reported the Cowboys plan to cut the receiver after the NFL draft.

Bryant has a cap hit of $16.5 million in each of the next two seasons, according to Spotrac, and releasing him could create significant flexibility with the salary cap.

The 29-year-old signed his current contract prior to the 2015 season and has struggled mightily since then. Even with missing 10 games due to injury, he is only averaging 53.6 yards per game in this stretch to go with 17 total touchdowns.

In the previous three seasons before signing his extension, Bryant averaged 82.0 yards per game to go with 41 receiving touchdowns. He also didn't miss a single regular-season game in this stretch.

The Cowboys signed Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson in free agency to help boost the receiving corps, but it also created a contingency in case they need to release Bryant.

While there is always an option to renegotiate the current contract, it remains to be seen whether the three-time Pro Bowler would agree to a new deal.

Without a timeline, however, Dallas has no urgency to make a decision before the start of next season. The organization could attempt to find a replacement in the draft before evaluating the roster with or without their star wideout.
