'They Out-Coached Me,' Rutgers HC Greg Schiano Reflects on Historic Loss to UMass

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano took responsibility for the team's surprising 37-21 loss to UMass on Thursday night.

"I wanna congratulate UMass and coach Harasymiak, his staff and players," Schiano said after the game, per Sports Illustrated's Bryan Fischer. "They out coached us, they out-coached me, they out-played our players. We got licked tonight. There's no other thing to say about it."

UMass was able to emerge victorious despite entering the contest on a 16-game losing streak, which contained the team's 0-12 finish in 2025. The Minutemen also picked up their first win over a power conference opponent since 1978 (h/t CBS Sports' Austin Nivison).

UMass received $1.55 million from the Scarlet Knights to play them on the road as well.

The Minutemen thrived on both sides of the ball during the first half, entering halftime with a 24-7 lead.

They extended their advantage to 30-7 before Rutgers could get on the board again, as a late comeback attempt by the Scarlet Knights fell short.

Schiano's team dealt with issues on both sides of the ball, as UMass finished with 397 yards of total offense. This included 200 rush yards.

Meanwhile, Rutgers only scored seven points through three quarters and committed four turnovers as a team.

The Scarlet Knights will attempt to bounce back in their next matchup, a clash with Boston College on Sept. 11.
