Lakers News: Isaiah Thomas Will Undergo Surgery on Hip Injury
The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday that point guard Isaiah Thomas will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right hip Thursday.
Thomas, 29, has missed the Lakers' last two games and traveled to New York on Monday to meet with a specialist.
"We will be doing a minimally invasive procedure to 'clean up' the joint of all inflammatory debris related to his injury from last season," Dr. Bryan Kelly of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York said in a statement, according to ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski.
A timetable for Thomas' recovery will be provided once the surgery is complete.
Thomas suffered a torn labrum and femoral-acetabular impingement in his right hip during the 2016-17 regular season with the Boston Celtics, and he aggravated the injury in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Incidentally, the Celtics shipped Thomas to the defending Eastern Conference champions in the Kyrie Irving blockbuster. However, the floor general missed the first 36 games of the season in Cleveland as he continued to rehab from the hip ailment.
The Cavaliers then traded him to the Lakers at the trade deadline following 15 appearances in wine and gold.
Assuming the surgery sidelines Thomas for the final nine games of the season, he will finish the year with averages of 15.2 points and 4.8 assists per game on 37.3 percent shooting from the field and 29.3 percent from three.
Thomas will be an unrestricted free agent July 1.
