Abysmal Build for John Cena vs Undertaker Spells Doom for WWE WrestleMania Match
On paper, John Cena squaring off against The Undertaker on the WrestleMania stage should be one of the biggest dream matches in WWE history.
After several weeks of abysmal build to the probable WrestleMania 34 bout on April 8 in New Orleans, wrestling fans will be getting anything but a dream match.
The biggest problem during the build to their WrestleMania bout hasn't been that Undertaker wasn't there, although that didn't help. He has missed the build to big matches before and then swooped in at the last moment with his music and all was forgiven. The main problem this time has been Cena.

While Cena can cut some of the best promos in the business when he is serious and believes in what he is saying, the approach to calling out Undertaker by questioning his character is weak and shallow.
Everyone knows Cena's words about a bona fide legend like The Deadman aren't true, and his body language proves he doesn't believe in what he is saying either.
If the WWE Universe doesn't buy it, then why would Undertaker care to respond from a storyline perspective?
And who is Cena to call out Undertaker for contemplating retirement and staying away from WWE? He is a nonstop marketing machine who is part of the movie and television industries now, so he isn't around as much as he'd like to claim. At least when Roman Reigns complains about Brock Lesnar only showing up when he wants, The Big Dog is truly there day in and day out.
Another problem a portion of the WWE Universe is having is that it believes Undertaker probably shouldn't return to in-ring competition ever again.
After losing to Reigns at WrestleMania in 2017, fans thought that would be the legend going out on his shield. Add in the fact last year's match wasn't good from a technical perspective either, and many believe it should have been the end of the line for Undertaker.
Now, the problem will be after Undertaker finally accepts Cena's challenge, the two men have to square off and put on a good match.
While there will undoubtedly be a moment when the two men stare at each other like The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8, they must have a technically sound match to appease the critics.
If Reigns couldn't get the best out of Undertaker and Cena needs to square off against a superior worker to have classic matches, the likely result will be a lackluster bout that will be largely forgetten by the end of the night.
Regardless of whether fans want the match to happen, the crowd in attendance will pop huge for Undertaker. Wherever he is and whatever he is doing, The Deadman will always be one of the most popular Superstars in history and will receive the adulation he deserves from the fans.
Despite Undertaker's massive response and the boisterous crowd reaction when Cena appears, that doesn't mean the story being told over the last several weeks didn't hurt the possible impact of the matchup on the business.
When Cena and Undertaker finally square off, it should be a moment that lives forever in the annals of WWE history. Unfortunately, the lack of an even marginally entertaining angle for the company's biggest pay-per-view hurts the chances of this going down as a great WrestleMania matchup.
