Mysterio held his own for a while and delivered the 619 to Braun Strowman, but he was unable to stave off elimination at the hands of Baron Corbin. With Mysterio standing on the ring apron, The Lone Wolf delivered a right hand to send him to the floor.
Earlier this month, PWInsider (h/t Tommy Messano of CagesideSeats.com) reported that Mysterio reached an agreement with WWE to appear at the Greatest Royal Rumble.
It was reportedly negotiated as a one-shot deal, although the door remains open for the two sides to work together more in the future.
The veteran is coming off a torn biceps that prevented him from facing Jushin "Thunder" Liger at New Japan Pro Wrestling's Strong Style Evolved in March.
Mysterio wrestled for WWE from 2002 until his contract expired in 2015. The latter part of his tenure was riddled with injuries, but he went on to enjoy success with other companies.
The Master of the 619 wrestled for several independent promotions and worked in Mexico during his hiatus.
He also joined the highly popular Lucha Underground where he had several entertaining matches and feuds, including a bout with Prince Puma (aka Ricochet) in the main event of Ultima Lucha Dos.
The 43-year-old Mysterio returned to the world of WWE in January when he appeared as a surprise entrant in the 2018 Royal Rumble match.
Mysterio entered at No. 27 and eliminated Adam Cole before he was tossed out by Finn Balor.
The live audience gave Mysterio a hugely positive reaction, which led to buzz regarding the three-time world champion making a full-time return.
With three world titles, three Cruiserweight Championships, two Intercontinental title reigns, four Tag Team Championship runs and a Royal Rumble win to his credit, Mysterio is among the most accomplished and recognizable stars in WWE history.
If there is more to his return beyond the Greatest Royal Rumble, Mysterio could be a huge asset to WWE.
In addition to appealing to the Latino market, Mysterio is highly popular with WWE's younger demographic, and the merchandising opportunities attached to him could be a major moneymaker for WWE.
With the Raw roster somewhat lacking after the Superstar Shake-up and 205 Live in need of some marquee talent, there are plenty of ways to potentially utilize Mysterio effectively in WWE.
While Mysterio has some scheduled engagements with other companies in the coming weeks and months, the fact that he has now competed for WWE twice in the past three months suggests that something bigger may be on the horizon with regard to their working relationship.
