Lou Williams Questions Jimmy Butler for Sitting out NBA All-Star Game
Elected to his fourth straight NBA All-Star Game, Jimmy Butler watched Sunday's contest from the bench. The Minnesota Timberwolves guard's decision to rest did not sit well with Lou Williams, who wanted an opportunity to play at the Staples Center.
Every active All-Star played besides Butler, who has recorded an NBA-high 37.3 minutes per game this season. Per NBA.com, Mike D'Antoni, who coached the squad drafted by Stephen Curry, explained Butler's absence.
"He was tired, and he just felt like his legs weren't there," D'Antoni said. "He didn't practice yesterday or play today. You have to respect that. He plays hard. Sometimes your body just needs a rest."
The decision wasted an All-Star spot that could have gone to an eager participant like Williams, who is averaging a career-high 23.2 points per game for the Los Angeles Clippers. He directed a tweet toward Butler after Team LeBron's 148-145 win.
Williams, who lost in the first round in Saturday's Skills Challenge, previously expressed his dismay over being left off the All-Star roster:
Even though the NBA installed a draft format for the game, the league still replaced the injured Kristaps Porzingis, Kevin Love and John Wall with fellow Eastern Conference players. Otherwise, Williams may have garnered a spot over Goran Dragic.
He wasn't the only Western Conference player with a gripe; Chris Paul and Nikola Jokic did not receive invites either.
