Eddie Guerrero's Most Memorable Matches, Moments in WrestleMania History

Mike ChiariMar 22, 2018

As one of the best all-around performers in WWE history, Eddie Guerrero made his presence felt on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

While Guerrero had his ups and downs in WWE and fought some personal demons, he eventually managed to work his way to the top of the company, which resulted in him taking part in a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 20.

That was undoubtedly one of the high points of Latino Heat's WWE career, but it was far from his only WrestleMania moment.

Even though Guerrero only had five WrestleMania matches prior to his death, he had a penchant for making them count.

Here is a rundown of the best WrestleMania matches and moments Guerrero ever took part in.

Guerrero Beats Test for the European Championship at WrestleMania X-Seven

1 of 4

Guerrero's first title match at a WrestleMania took place at WrestleMania X-Seven when he challenged Test for the European Championship.

Eddie made his WrestleMania debut one year earlier when he and Radicalz teammates Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn faced Too Cool and Chyna.

While the bout with Test was technically a singles match, Guerrero had no shortage of help from his Radicalz cohorts throughout.

At one point, Malenko and Saturn distracted the referee, which allowed Guerrero to use the European Championship as a weapon.

After hitting Test with the title, Guerrero scored the pinfall victory and began his second reign as European champion.

The match was a fairly short one compared to many of the other contests on the card, but it told a good story and presented Guerrero with yet another stepping stone on his gradual journey toward the top.

It is easy to forget about the match between Guerrero and Test considering the fact that WrestleMania X-Seven was among the most stacked shows in WWE history.

Even so, they contributed to the quality flow of the event, and the heel antics of the Radicalz went a long way toward helping Guerrero develop into one of WWE's best villains.

Guerrero Outfoxes Kurt Angle at WrestleMania XX to Retain the WWE Championship

2 of 4

Guerrero never main-evented a WrestleMania, but his match with Kurt Angle at WrestleMania XX was a main event for all intents and purposes.

The bout was the third-last match on the card, but Guerrero and Angle both put on a performance that would have been fitting of closing the show at most WrestleManias in WWE history.

Latino Heat entered the event as WWE champion after beating Brock Lesnar to win the title in the main event of No Way Out 2004.

Following a full heel turn by Angle, Guerrero's title reign was in danger of coming to an end before it ever gained much momentum.

There was a ton of heat between the competitors leading up to WrestleMania since Angle betrayed Guerrero and cut promos about Guerrero's previous issues with substance abuse.

In the ring, the contest was a technical classic, with both Superstars going move for move from start to finish.

Angle seemingly had the advantage in a mat-based affair since he was an Olympic gold medalist in amateur wrestling, but Guerrero managed to keep up with him, and that clearly frustrated Angle at times.

Things came to a head when Guerrero made the savvy decision to loosen his boot after surviving an ankle lock from Angle.

When Angle when for another ankle lock, Eddie managed to wiggle out of the boot and surprise Angle with a roll-up to retain the title.

Angle appeared to have Guerrero right where he wanted him, but Eddie's mantra of "lie, cheat and steal" went a long way toward helping him pick up one of the biggest wins of his life.

Eddie and Chris Benoit Celebrate to Close WrestleMania XX

3 of 4

Guerrero's night wasn't over when he beat Angle to retain the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XX, as he made one more appearance.

In the main event of the show, Royal Rumble winner Chris Benoit went up against Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a Triple Threat for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The match was a great one, and it ended in spectacular fashion with Benoit forcing The Game to tap out to the Crippler Crossface.

While Benoit was long considered one of the best in-ring workers in the world, it was never clear if he would be given the opportunity to become a world champion.

The fans were hugely behind Benoit following his Rumble win, and after beating two all-time greats in Triple H and Michaels, the celebration to conclude WrestleMania XX was raucous.

Benoit wasn't alone, though, as Guerrero made his way to the ring and embraced his longtime friend.

Guerrero and Benoit wrestled all over the world together, including Japan, ECW and WCW before jumping ship to WWE as half of the Radicalz stable along with Malenko and Saturn.

Both Guerrero and Benoit managed to reach the top of their profession in the same night, and the scene of them hugging in a storm of confetti is one that would have been played by WWE for years to come.

The moment has unfortunately been shunned by WWE due to Benoit's involvement, however.

WWE has rightly separated itself from Benoit since he murdered his wife and child before killing himself in 2007.

While WWE can no longer promote Benoit in good conscience, it is a shame that Guerrero's role in the celebration has essentially been erased from WWE history as well.

Eddie and Rey Mysterio Open WrestleMania 21 with a Barnburner

4 of 4

After being in one of the main event matches at WrestleMania XX, Guerrero opened the show at WrestleMania 21 along with longtime friend Rey Mysterio.

Guerrero and Mysterio faced each other countless times during their illustrious careers, and their clash at WrestleMania 21 was one of their best and most memorable encounters.

The story entering the match was a great one, as Guerrero and Mysterio were tag team champions who decided to face each other rather than defending their titles at the behest of Chavo Guerrero.

The match between Eddie Guerrero and Mysterio set the tone for the entire show, and they fed off each other well throughout the contest.

Guerrero and Mysterio were always evenly matched opponents, and that was apparent at WrestleMania 21, since they had an answer for each other at nearly every turn.

In the end, Guerrero missed a frog splash, and Mysterio took advantage by hitting him with a Hurricanrana for the win.

Mysterio's win produced a great moment, as he and Guerrero embraced after the match and reveled in the show they had just put on.

Moving forward, Mysterio's win was a catalyst for Guerrero turning on him and once again adopting a heel persona.

Guerrero clearly had many fantastic WrestleMania matches left in him, but due to his death in 2005, his WrestleMania 21 match with Mysterio was his last.

Although Eddie's career and life were cut tragically short, he still managed to leave an indelible mark on WrestleMania and WWE as a whole.
