Triple H's Most Memorable Matches, Moments in WrestleMania History

Tim DanielsMar 19, 2018

Triple H has put together one of the most impressive WrestleMania resumes in WWE history thanks to his combination of success and longevity. He's matched up with most of the industry's top names over the past two decades at the Showcase of the Immortals.

The artist formerly known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley took on the likes of The Ultimate Warrior and Owen Hart early in his career. More recently, he's battled the next generation of Superstars, including meetings with Shield members Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins over the past two years.

Triple H hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, either. He's remained in peak physical condition, which means he will likely continue to compete at 'Mania for the foreseeable future. Therefore, expect his already stacked list of opponents at the Show of Shows to keep growing.

Let's take a look back at some of his most memorable encounters at WrestleMania, starting with his debut at the event.

1st WrestleMania Match vs. the Ultimate Warrior (1996)

1 of 5

Triple H has come a long way since his arrival to the WrestleMania stage.

The New Hampshire native struggled to make an impact during his first few years with the company. His first 'Mania match was a perfect example of those initial setbacks, as he was squashed by the returning Ultimate Warrior in under two minutes.

He faced Goldust in an undercard match the following year before the formation of D-Generation X later in 1997 helped skyrocket him toward superstardom.

Nevertheless, seeing a wrestler with Triple H's accolades taking such a lopsided loss is even more interesting in retrospect.

Fatal 4-Way for WWF Title vs. The Rock, Mick Foley and Big Show (2000)

2 of 5

Triple H ascended to the main event for WrestleMania 2000, where he took on three of the era's biggest names in a Fatal 4-Way match that also involved the entire McMahon family.

The Game was paired with Stephanie, while The Rock (Vince), Mick Foley (Linda) and Big Show (Shane) also had members of WWE's first family in their corners.

After an elimination match that lasted over 36 minutes, Triple H picked up the victory as Vince turned heel on The Rock to help the champion retain his title.

There is no bigger sign the company views a wrestler as the guy than having him win the last match on the card at WrestleMania. Winning this particular clash, with the McMahon family so heavily involved, showcased the bright future Triple H had on the horizon.

3 Chances to End the Undertaker's Streak (2001, 2011, 2012)

3 of 5

Along with main-eventing the show, getting a chance to take on The Undertaker on wrestling's grandest stage is another immense honor. Triple H received that privilege three times.

The first meeting was all the way back at WrestleMania X-Seven, which Taker entered with a more modest eight-match winning streak compared to the 21 he reached. The initial clash between the duo may have been the best of the trio, with the Deadman still in his physical prime.

They renewed hostilities for back-to-back matches a decade later. After a solid back-and-forth encounter at WrestleMania XXVII, they added Triple H's longtime friend Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee for their Hell in a Cell match the following year. Even HBK's help wasn't enough to end the streak, though.

While Brock Lesnar ended Undertaker's run of perfection at WrestleMania XXX, Triple H was involved in three of The Phenom's best matches at the event.

The Yes Movement's Biggest Foe (2014)

4 of 5

While Triple H's match with Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania XXX may not be among the top five of his 'Mania career, the moment associated with it was outstanding.

The King of Kings, along his his wife Stephanie, played the heel authority role perfectly throughout the feud with Bryan. It created at least a small feeling that the WWE would allow him to bury the Yes Movement at the year's biggest event.

That didn't happen. Bryan defeated Triple H, earning him a place in that night's main event, wherein he overcome Batista and Randy Orton to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, sparking a massive celebration inside New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

While Triple H takes some grief from the Internet Wrestling Community about whether he does enough to help advance younger talent, which is a debatable point, the work he did to help Bryan's momentum reach fever pitch was some of his best, and it culminated in a WrestleMania loss.

Flashback Dream Match vs. Sting (2015)

5 of 5

Triple H and Sting never had an opportunity to face off in their respective primes. Sting stayed with WCW throughout the Monday Night War and then headed for TNA rather than jumping to WWE.

He finally arrived to the company in 2014. His in-ring debut came when he attacked Triple H at Survivor Series, setting the stage for a feud that led to their meeting at WrestleMania the following year.

Although the match wasn't a technical masterpiece, DX and the NWO's involvement made for quite a nostalgic journey. And having so many legends in the ring together afterward, which also saw Triple H and Sting shake hands, was a WrestleMania moment in every sense of the term.

There will probably be another addition or two to Triple H's 'Mania legacy. But even if he never wrestled at the show again, he's already one of its top performers of all time.
