Brett Brown: 'I Was Completely Misquoted' on Comments About Markelle Fultz
According to ESPN's broadcast, Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown thinks some of Markelle Fultz's problems are in his head. However, the coach clarified on Monday that isn't what he said.
"I was completely misquoted," Brown said, per Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "There was no reference to any of that. I’ve spoken to ESPN this morning. They’re very apologetic. Markelle Fultz’s injury has been well documented. I have talked about this hundreds and hundreds of times."
ESPN's Mark Jones said during Sunday's game between the 76ers and Thunder that Brown believes Fultz has "psychosomatic effects" with his shooting.
Fultz clearly wasn't happy with the discussion on the broadcast:
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft only played four games this year before going down with a shoulder injury. It has taken a long time to work his way back, and as of mid-January he still didn't have a timetable for return.
Meanwhile, his shooting form appears to have been altered based on recent videos from practices.
Brown recently discussed how this has affected his plan for Fultz's return.
"He can still impact an NBA game without having to shoot," the coach said this month, per Pompey. "That doesn’t make him whole, though. Finding that where he can and go into an NBA game and feel more whole than he currently does is the timeline of 'Ok when does he go play.'"
Fultz made 41.3 percent of his three-point shots last year in his only season at Washington, so he has the ability to shoot when healthy. However, there are apparently major questions when or if he can return to 100 percent.
